    First 1,000+ miles tank on Gen III Enginer PHEV - It has a bigger tank than you think.

    First tank on Enginer PHEV without it breaking down 1,146.7 miles

    Previous fill up on Feb 26th @ 8,919 ODO at Shell, 87 octane E10, additional 1.5gal pumped after the first click. DTE the usual 589. Grille blocked.

    Low fuel blinking at 1,002 mile on April 9th
    0 DTE @ 1,030 miles on April 10th
    145 miles driven after blinking low fuel
    117 miles driven after 0 DTE - getting nervous about running out of gas so I decided to fill up today.

    April 14th - filled up at Shell 87 octane E10
    10,067 ODO - at the time of fill up
    1,147.6 total miles driven since last fill up
    10.95 gal first click
    1.5gal pumped after the first click
    12.482 gal Total fuel pumped :eek: - It's nowhere near brimmed because I can hear the gas slushing in the tank.
    $4.079/gal $50.91 fuel cost
    electricity cost - Unknown. I didn't track the electricity. I've only been able to charge 2.8kw a night for the last few weeks due to faulty BMS.
    MFD showed 97.2mpg
    calculated 91.87mpg
    New DTE shows 714 :eek:

    That is crazy awesome, man! Congrats

    I 'm curious about the gallons pumped though. I mean how could you get that much fuel in there without filling up the filler neck?

    The first 2 tanks ever, I was able to filled just a bit over 2 gallons after the first click before gas spilling out of the brim. Then I heard that it's not good to fill up to the neck so ever since then I just fill 1.5 gallons after first click. I can always hear the gasoline slushing in the tank after every fill up.

    I always fill it up to the brim, but could you tell me why it is not good to fill it up that much?
    Nobody ever told me this, so I really would like to know.

    Most cars have a charcoal canister to absorb the fuel fumes while you're getting gas. If you overfill your tank, you run the risk of contaminating this canister. I did this in my '02 Sonata. It kept getting harder and harder to put any gas in it. The pumps would shut off after .6 gal. I would have to wait about 15 sec. for the fumes to dissipate without the help of the charcoal canister. It was a $600 repair, so I never bothered.

    My Tacoma has the charcoal canister in the engine bay. I fill it to the brim every single fill up ever since I bought the truck in 96. Nothing broke.

    1998 Nissan Altima. The Nissan Service people wanted $400 to solve the probem of "slow fuel fill". This included replacing the cannister and other assorted labor activities. The car is a great runner, but it's market value was less than the price of the new cannister. So I did not have them do the work. Instead I went home and disconnected the vent hose where it enters the cannister, and walking away and forgetting to re-attach the hose, solved the problem (albeit illegally in some states). It appears that overfilling the tank when gassing up eventually leads to destruction of the cannister's efficiency, creating a partial blockage. Disconnecting the hose allows the tank to vent freely when filling with gas. But; you did not hear this from me.

    I have filled our Prius several times right to the brim, and
    nothing ever broke, the check engine light never went
    on, the engine never seized up or exploded.

    Nothing had or has happened......

    As long as you don't spill gas into the vent at the top of the neck you should be okay, even if you do spill it would take many time to begin to notice an issue over several years. It was easier to do safely before they started to install the rubber seals on the gas pumps.

    The gas will always be able to slosh. Tanks are made so some air is trapped in the top of the tank to allow for expansion.

    How did this post turn into a discussion about over filling? I think there was amazing mileage posted at the beginning of this discussion but I just can't remember how great it was....

    It got turned into over filling discussion because I filled almost 12.5 gallons of gas into an 11.9 gal tank.

    Second Tank with Enginer kit
    This tank had about 300 miles of freeway driving with the kit off ended with 55mpg on the MFD.

    Previous fill up on Aprl 14th @ 10,067 ODO at Shell, 87 octane E10, additional 1.5gal pumped after the first click. Grille unblocked since April 14th.

    Low fuel blinking at 805 mile on May 5th
    0 DTE @ 835 miles on April 5th
    131 miles driven after blinking low fuel
    101 miles driven after 0 DTE - I had a feeling that I was running on fumes so I had to fill it up.

    May 10th - filled up at Shell 87 octane E10
    11,004 ODO - at the time of fill up
    936.6 miles driven since last fill up
    11.4 gal first click
    0.5 gal pumped after the first click - I could have pumped 1 more gallon into the tank like last time but I only had $50 on me.
    11.908 gal Total fuel pumped - I could have pumped 12.9 gal of gas. I wonder just how many gallons of gas can the Prius take if the car has ran out of gas.
    $4.199/gal $50 fuel cost
    electricity Usage - Between 75 and 80 kw. My Killawatt at home shows 66.4kw but I've charged at my parents house a few times.

    MFD showed 75mpg
    calculated 72.3mpg - Even though I pumped 11.9 gal this time I had to calculate the mileage based on 12.9gal of fuel because last tank I pumped additional 1.5 gal after first click where as this tank I only pumped .5 gal after first click.
    New DTE shows 726

    My kit is down to 2kw per charge. My range has dropped to about 15-18 miles blended mode. During those 18 miles, it only returned 70-90mpg. I don't drive with fuel saving in mind anymore because almost half tank was driven on the freeway. I just follow the flow of traffic, and use AC when the weather gets hot.

    You don't want to over fill your tank. In other words, when it shuts off, STOP! Yes, you can put more gas in, but what you are doing is messing with the car's emission system. Prolonged filling it up to the point you describe will eventally damage the car. Your emission system is a sealed system and NEEDS that room for fuel expansion and fuel vapor control.

    Of course, you could ask your dealer what the vapor recover cannister costs to replace.

    I have an 03 Tacoma with the canister under the truck bed. It cost me $600 to have them remove the bed to replace the canister because I overfilled the tank.

    You guys are all missing the point cproaudio accomplished a 1,100 mile tank and you guys do not even acknowledge that whats wrong with you guys???? His car is under warranty for 3 years if he overfills while under warranty its Toyota's problem and if he has extended warranty then he can over fill for a long time!!

    Who can install PHEV kits and where can I get one? I'll assume it takes a minimum of $3 grand to get this done (less if you are brave/smart enough to DIY)

    Just got done with another tank today and what an amazing tank it is. I drove 201 miles on the last blinking pip. 1271.6 miles on a tank. I pumped 11.361 gal which average out to 111.9mpg. The balanced pack and MiniBMS helped a lot.

    Previous fill up on May 20th @ 11,797 ODO at Shell, 87 octane E10

    201 miles driven after blinking low fuel

    July 16th - filled up at Shell 87 octane E10
    13,069 ODO - at the time of fill up
    1271.6 total miles driven since last fill up
    11.361 gal pumped

    $3.799/gal $43.16 fuel cost
    electricity used - 190kw

    MFD showed 99.9mpg
    calculated 111.9mpg
    New DTE shows 838
