I'm old enuf to remember General Electric's old media motto:

"Progress is our most important product"

-via Allen Ludden(Betty White's dearly departed)

    Now it appears to be:

"Profit is our most important product"

Ahhh yes.... good ol' Yankee capitalism/corporatism at any price..... and increasingly at the expense of both loyal consumers and taxpayers. And where are GE's products produced now?

    Not here.... :(

Interesting,, I always thought that 100% of nothing was still nothing! What is 150,000% of nothing?

GE not paying any taxes is a big problem.......but with our tax code, not GE.

Even I make sure I pay the minimum taxes required to the government.

I think he's facetious or referring to the fact that they also got a $3.4 billion refund. I have no idea if that equals 150,000% more or not but I'm quite sure some of that refund was your money and it was done while on Obama's watch! Still insist that the Republican's are the party of Big Biz?

What I'd like is proof for his claim that we've spent Trillions on Mid-East wars, what's up with that? :noidea:

TREB, it has been well documented on this forum and elsewhere that the current and future costs of the two wars are going to be well. In excess of one trillion. The health care costs alone going forward of seriously injured vets is, and is going to continue to be huge!

Do some research if you don't believe me.

I know my math is wrong but i was trying to say if ge paid 1 penny in taxes i paid 150,000 percent more than them. Such as if i paid 2 cents i paid 100% more than them cause they paid 1 penny. I didn't even consider they got money back. It just bothers me that i make around 20k and pay thousands of times more in fedral taxes than GE. Sometimes i'm embarassed to think about our country. And i have no problem paying what i do, but it sucks it being handed right over to GE.

We spend around 1 trillion a year on defence. How long have we been in the middle east?30 years? You have to admit half of the defence is spent in the middle east, for at least the last 8+ years. America spends more on war than EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY ADDED TOGETHER, and were the most hated country.....

The problem is GE spending millions and millions on lobbing our goverment. GE scratches their back and GE now gets it's scratched.

    Ada,

I am not arguing your point, only joking on the math!

I think a better solution is to reduce corporate tax rates to the world average, but raise capital gain and dividend income tax rates passed through to individuals, since all corporate profits ultimately go to someone. And the reality is that the bulk of them go to a relatively few very rich people.

When we started building the interstate highway system the maximum individual federal income tax rate was 87%. When we landed on the Moon it was 77%. Today it's 35%. For 30 years now we've been too cheap to do what needed to be done. No wonder we're going broke and everything is falling apart.

If we want something we have to pay for it, and that means raising taxes. One way or another, the days of Republican-style borrowing-and-spending like drunken sailors and getting a free ride on the investments of the past are over.

Certainly agree with the subtile corruption that leads to situations like this. The corporation is not evil doing exactly what I'm doing.....following the path of least taxes. The problem is in the government tax code which is corrupted to the extreme. Corporations will ALWAYS be lobbying for favors......it's the governments job to keep that in control, not the corporation's.

It's misleading to talk about raising rates when the loopholes make any "rate" increase a diversion of meaningless discussions. Hopefully this example will educate a few that rate increases need to be set aside and loophole elimination needs to be addressed first.

Here you go TREB, since you never wish to venture out of your sphere of unreality:

With all the various and interesting links posted, it may be appropriate at this time to provide the OP's link again, just in case folks want to quickly see the actual estimates of where ones federal income taxes currently go. The results are interactively derived from basic individual/family tax return or W-2 numbers. Of course, if one wants to plug in hypothetical numbers from other income tax rate levels that is certainly possible too!

One can expand many major result category headings to derive more detail. Some folks will likely be surprised.... ;)

Well this is just another example of how tax revenue has been a problem here for many decades. I think to be effective, it would require a very unilateral reform of the tax code. For many years, any reform in the tax code has ushered a way more complicated system (and hince my skepticism). I don't think we should be looking at flat sales taxes as much as income taxes that don't have as many loopholes (I think it's ridiculous how many loopholes there are for certain situations).

Just to play advocate here, not everyone checks the forum on a daily basis. :) And sometimes when two sides will never agree you just give up and leave. Not because "you are wrong" but because "they will never learn". Both sides usually feel that way against the other.

You mean you "do think" right?

The problem is you are placing a flat tax over people who are not all in a similar financial situation. I am OK with paying 40%. But some people paying anything would break them. So a graduated scale with those earning more paying more percentage wise (and therefore much much more in general) would be best for revenue and getting the country back in order while at the same time not decimating whatever is left of the lower and lower middle classes.

We just need to get the idea that you can't have everything and pay nothing for it through the minds of some.
