Unveiled as a concept car one year ago at the Geneva Motor Show, the 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid car powered by a 500-horsepower V8 gasoline engine and two electric motors -- one each in the front and rear axles -- that will produce at least 218 horsepower more, Porsche promises.

The car's top speed will be 199 miles per hour, Porsche claims, and it will be capable of zero-to-60 acceleration in just 3.1 seconds. The 918 Spyder will also be able to drive under electric power at speeds up to 94 miles per hour, at least for "limited distances."

While official fuel economy figures are not yet available, Porsche anticipates the 918 Spyder will get about 78 miles per gallon.

A two-seat convertible, the 918 Spyder will have removable roof panels that can be stored in the car's front-end luggage compartment.

So how under engineered do you guys think your prius is. Finally you know they suck.

A diesel from vw(same as porsche) with no electric motor will give 68 miles to a gallon for the same price as an prius.

Thanks good luck explaining why your prius is better.

The average VW does not get better mileage than a Prius, ever. Limited cases are possible. Since you're citing the best case scenario, I'll do the same.

The Prius gets up to 120 mpg. Of course it's not faster than a Porsche, but yes, it's more fuel efficient than a VW, and certainly better than a Porsche. Any other claim can't be taken seriously. A bit like you.

PS, moderators, this sort of nonsense should be erased from the boards. Between things like this and tpfun, the factual inaccuracies and provocations multiply exponentially.

Well ... for one thing, my Prius is parked in my garage. I am going to get in it and drive it away soon.

Concept cars are just that ... concepts. They need not meet highway safety laws, environmental restraints ... and they cost an absolute fortune. We will all be watching for Porsche to market the vehicle.

The VW diesel ... I have owned my first and last VW. While I am certain there have been improvements since my last one ... a square-vack sedan, I have never owned a vehicle that was so poorly designed, and hazardous to drive. If that is their corporate integrity ... then no thanks.

It looks and sounds like a pretty awesome car. Not sure why it brings out such an attitude in the OP, though.

Its a really cool car. I love the tech. You should correct this though. There are 3 motors one at each of the front wheels, and one as an electric flywheel at the engine rear axle.

probably those bogus European cycle mpg. I would like to see what real world drivers get. The big thing also is its a plug in that can go 16 miles on electric alone.
You should get a better source of your information. We looked at the great tech from porsche before. They are only making 918 of them and they cost 700,000 euros. That kind of engineering comes at the cost of multiple houses. The prius also has world leading engineering but is affordable.

Good luck on a vw tdi being the same as a porsche 500hp engine. Have you even driven a porsche? You know nothing of porsches. If you are going to try to bait us you need something better. That vw is also getting tested on a different cycle. Read motor-trend on comparisons the prius gets better mileage and spews less pollution.

As a Mental Health Professional, I think the OP has issues. All the spewing of nastiness suggests an anger issue. Freud might suspect penis envy.

... which still comes up short of what a Honda Civic Hybrid did earlier on the same route --- in colder weather with some snow.

Not only that but those are all estimates....very generous ones I would bet.

Come on, there are no 300hp Lexus hybrids getting 50mpg I am not going to buy for a second that the Porsche can do 50% better with more than 2x the power. Not only that but where does all this crap fit?

I think it will be a killer car and if it hits 30mpg its a raving success in my eyes but if they can get 78mpg out of 700hp why does the Cayene get 24mpg highway with less than half the power and way more battery space?

Are you a multi-millionaire? Can you afford this car? If not, please go away. If yes, please go to a Porsche forum and rant there. Thank you.

Oh, and don't forget the four people and their baggage on board throughout the entire covered distance.

Obviously, the OP should have done some research before dumping on the Prius (the highest rated hybrid) and embarrassing himself in this way.

No just a pre-pubescent adolescent that’s out of touch with reality! Give him another 20 years and he’ll be driving a Prius, if he can afford one…

I can not only afford to buy one, but I can afford to maintain it.

Try that with a Porsche and report back. We'll be waiting.

No thanks, did that in my mid 20s and couldn't keep up, and that was with a 4 cylinder Porsche!

Leeme see, because Prius sells in the top 15 of all cars and trucks in the USA ...

Are you nuts comparing a concept Porsche to a Prius? Why wouldn't you compare this to a Tesla Roadster which exists unlike this concept whose specs exist on paper?

    Get a grip man
