I was driving by the Irvine Hyundai dealer earlier when I noticed the front end of one of the Sonatas didn't match the others. So, I made a U-turn and took a closer look. The Sonata Hybrids are officially here. The one on the lot had a sold sign on it. Although it is made in South Korea, I wonder if production will be impacted by Japanese parts. Does anyone know?

Great 37 MPG for a car this size. SULEV emission too. Two thumbs up!

Sounds like real competition for the Camry hybrid.

I'm feeling lazy today. Can someone remind me how the Sonata hybrid system is different? Is it only the use of a normal 6-speed transmission, rather than a planetary gear set?

It is like Honda IMA (with a small motor to start ICE, supplement torque and generator electricity) but with a clutch before the transmission. A second motor is in the transmission to replace the torque converter and also to turn the wheels.

It is not P2 hybrid because it only has one clutch.

Low price for a damn nice car. Looks like Toyota is getting some serious competition

Now build an Elantra Hybrid and they will have a very high MPG vehicle that is way cool looking.

They are coming out with the Blue Will to compete with Prius. I hope they offer both the cordless and plugin versions.

GM should be doing this and stop wasting time and money on controversial EREV or the misleading MPG (ignoring ele tricity) marketing. GM is doing a plugin hybrid using the once cancelled 2-mode hybrid. It appears Voltec is not scalable.

I just saw one driving around today. "hybrid" logo on the right.

I'd still rather own a Prius though.

For folks that want essentially a full size vehicle, this would definitely be at the top of my list. That price is really good, considering the size & hybrid. I agree with the earlier comment of needing an Elantra version. Heck, even an Accent version would be nice.

I sat in the hybrid at the Philly Auto Show, and it seemed nice. Maybe I'll swing by the dealership this summer and see if they have any. I just hate feeling like I'm wasting their time by test driving something that I know I will not be purchasing (at least at that time).

^ My thoughts too. If I needed a full-size car, I would be giving it serious consideration. It is a very good price for what you get. It turns out the Prius is the right size for my needs.

People who opt for extra utility may go for SUV's, Minivans, Crossovers, MPVs, etc.

The Prius v may be good competition.

We need to see how the Sonata Hybrid does in the long-term.

$31,645 with leather and some nice stuff.

Does anyone know if Hertz car rental rents the hybrid? I know they rent the regular Sonata. I am renting a car this Friday and certainly would get a Sonata Hybrid to give it a few thousand mile test ride over the next three weeks. Otherwise I will rent a 3rd Gen Prius :)

I'll admit it, I'm a traitor...I traded my 2010 Prius IV for a 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The Sonata gets approximately 10 miles less per gallon, and gets better mileage on the highway than in city driving. While I love and miss my Prius, the Hyundai is a really sweet looking car and fun to drive. It's also nicer inside then many Mercedes and BMWs.

I bought the premium package Sonata. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but what made the deal for me was that I was able to trade my 2 yr old 34000 mile, totally scratched up Prius for 21K- only 5K less than what I paid for it.
