Tire wear - how many miles are people getting on their stock tires?

    My Prius came with the Yokohama Avids, and I just replaced them at 32K. There was some tread left, but they were getting low, and very noisy. I put a set of Goodyear Assurance Comfortred Touring tires on because I wanted reduced noise. So far, they are much quieter, but it appears to have cost me about 1.5MPG (guesstimate). I'm only on the second tank, so we'll see what the mileage penalty is.

    Honestly, I'm not worried about a couple of miles per gallon. I really wanted a quieter car...

    32K on Yokohama Avids and still appear to have 20k left. I rotated them once at 5k and that's it. Great tires, but want the Mich energy savers.

    The original tires, which had no tread to speak of, were crap, smooth, to show off mileage. They were replaced after a year, at the dealership. This set lasted less than a year. The next set was bought locally and lasted slightly more than a year, at half the price. Now we have to get more new tires, and the car is at about 88,000 miles. Full disclosure: We live in NW Arkansas and every trip anywhere includes 3 miles of gravel road. I understand no manufacturer gives a warrantee in this area. The first set included a trip to Oregon, and the last set included a trip to New Jersey, but it's our own road that eats up the tires.

    I'm taking corners rather sharply (or actually not even that sharply) and hearing the characteristic skidding sounds off of my stock Yokohama Avids.

    Is this going to affect the life of the tires?

    Probably not much but it depends on how often and how fast. I drive faster than most in corners and after 41K miles I see about 1/32 more wear on the inside and outside edges than the center. I usually use 45 psi front and rear.

    So in reality despite quite a bit of fairly fast cornering on mountain and canyon roads I think my OEM tires have done rather well. I am down to less than 4/32 now so I'll be buying some new Michelins fairly soon.

    Of course I don't know how long these tires (Toyo Proxis A20) would last if I drove more reasonably. I don't think anyone else with the same tires has posted about their tire wear yet.

    I rotated my tires at 15K, but I'm thinking I'm not rotating any longer. I don't see why I can't get 50K from my stock Yokohamas. I like your style!

    I'm now approaching 35,000 on my Avid's and I'm pretty sure they'll safely go to 50,000 from what I'm seeing. The higher PSI makes all the difference.

    51,000 miles on my Bridgestone Turanza 17" and probably 20,000 more in them.

    They are 51 PSI rated tires, I run 46 front and 44 rear. Lots of 80 MPH ... or faster on 3 major trips, 3000, 3500, and 4000 miles.

    Glass smooth at 80, great ride and handling.

    I have 60053 miles on stock wheels and the tires still have some tread left. Just received my 17" Momo rim and 224/45 Yokohoma AVID..will replace them this weekend.

    Our OEM Yokohama S33Ds were at 42,956 miles when they were pulled off to install a winter wheel and tire set. We ran the factory pressures for the first 5000 miles, then 42F / 40R for another 5000 miles, followed by 40F / 38R for the duration. Here are some photos of the worst tire.

    Your wear was a bit more even than mine but I ran crazy high pressure for awhile.

    Actually those are pictures of the worst tire. The two that came off the rear were in better overall shape, but they did show heavier wear in the center. I skipped a rotation awhile back, so the tires were on the same positions for over 10,000 miles. Maybe the pair on the rear were overinflated at 38 PSI. OTOH, maybe tire rotation would have taken care of that.

    This is good to know. In most cases wear is even with overinflated tires on the Prius but it seems in some cases center wear is worse as would be expected using conventional wisdom. Although 38psi isn't really overinflated IMO. Thanks for posting your experience. :)

    I've been searching the forums for experiences on the Michelin Energy Saver A/S but not finding much thus far. What replacement tires are you running outside of winter?

    I can usually run summer tires all year long. I currently run the Yokohama dB Super E-Spec 185/65/15. I really like them but fear they don't have a super long treadlife. Probably similar to the Ecopia EP100 or the Energy Saver A/S. See the link in my sig for a review. My point for choosing them was the fact they are the most sustainable eco-friendly tire that achieves great mpg, handles well, is quiet, etc.. If economics was my main concern then I would have went with a different tire.

    I have also run the Nokian i3 and those were excellent tires too.

    The Energy Saver A/S is the best MPG tire that we know of that comes in a size for the Prius but they have been difficult to obtain. Hopefully 2012 will be better. The other drawback is they are expensive like the dB Super E-Spec. I believe the better mpg they provide outweighs their high price as long as you can get 50,000+ miles out of them. Otherwise the Continental ContiProContact with EcoPlus is a good alternative. The MPG isn't as good but everything else is great and they have an 80,000 mile warranty. I think the tire closest to the Energy Saver A/S is the Ecopia EP100.

    I posted once on this thread, just an update.


    My 2010 Prius came with the 17" Brigestone Turanza tires. 215/45R17 V speed rated. I ran them at 46 psi front and 44 rear, and no, that is NOT overinflated. They are metric and rated for a max pressure of 51 PSI so I am not near the max on them.

    I had them rotated every oil change ... which means every 10,000 miles. I replaced them with Michelin MXM4 tires at about 52,000 miles. They were not worn out (5/32 inch left), just starting to get noisy from some edge wear.

    With them, I got about 48 MPG over those 52,000 miles ... and that included perhaps 10,000 miles above 80 MPH.

    With my new Michelins, my mileage is about the same but the ride is better. I have about 10,000 miles on the new tires so I don't have enough miles to yet get a treadwear guess.

    Most of you are getting much better mileage than I got from my Ecopias 38,000kms (23600kms approx). I do drive dirt a lot and most of my driving is high speed freeway. I also think we have Asian spec tyres here which may have softer compunds. My present tyre are Micheli Primacy LCs which are not available in the US. I am coming up to 80,000kms with these which is twice as far as the original tyres.

    Yokohama Avid S33 - Run them at 44 PSI front, 42 PSI rear, rotated every 5000 miles. At the last rotation (35,000 miles) I had 6/32 tread. Start was 10/32, wear bars at 2/32, thus 50% worn. I could get 70,000 miles on this set, although they will likely be replaced at 60,000 miles since I will be down to 3/32 and our wet winter weather will be upon us.

    Reading the comments both here and at the tire rack almost suggests that there are two versions of this tire. Some of us are easily surpassing 40,000 miles while another group claims that the tread is completely worn out by 20,000 miles. What's up with that?

    I wish I could find someone who had swapped out this tire for the Michelin Energy Saver A/S because that review at the Tire Rack seems to be a bit dated.

    p.s. The Tire Rack is now showing January 13, 2012 as the availability date for the Michelin Energy Saver A/S.

    My 17" Toyo tires were down to 4/32 at 23000 miles.(rotated twice) Thanks to Justin's (F8L) review of the Michelin MXM4 tires, I replaced them with the Michelins and couldn't be happier. They are much smoother, quieter, and better rain tire than the Toyo tires and I'm sure they will wear much better.
