Believe it or not, I have a mother. She currently has a 06 Gen2 that she's thinking of letting my other bro drive (my real bro, not brosefs like you guys). So she says, "we should buy another Prius." However, she hates the way the Gen III looks and when she says she wants to buy another Prius, she means Gen II.

From all the reading I do here, I'm convinced she should get a Gen III this time around. It's just a better car. Better underbody. Better mileage. But here's the things she complains about the Gen III.

    - The "nose" (front toyota emblem)
    - How the car/window lines slope down
    - Poor rear view visibility and blind spots over shoulders
    - How it doesn't have the bar graph MFD display.

I think some of these are pretty petty complaints. She be making me look bad. And I can't look bad. I dont mess arounnn'. You know what I is saying?

I think she deserves a Gen III or CT200h, but old lady really loves the Gen II. How can I finally convince her to get a Gen III? Thanks all!

I don't think she is getting a car for the same reason we bought our cars - better mileage, more reliable than used (all things being equal), etc. So if the Gen II is prettier to her, then by all means. She could also wait till the v comes out, which looks more like a Gen II, has a prettier dash, and then she could haul her tots around (you and the real bro). I think she may not like the CT since it sits lower to the ground, and she might complain about having to get up and down from such a low seat. Also, she can get drunkinmaster's cool emblem light for the III, so there you go.

Funny you should say that. I showed her a picture of the v when it was unveiled and she really liked it. Then she asked me what mileage it got and then I was like, idk 42? And she said "oh forget it." So she does care about mileage (bad case for CT200h). She can squeeze 56mpg out of her current Gen II.

She'll grow accustomed to the design.

It does have a bar graph.

The blind spots take some getting use to, but it's not impossible.

Tell her that 42 mpg vs. 50 mpg is very very very very very small difference in the grand scheme of things, esp. if she drives less than 12k miles/year.

I vote for the Gen II. I also passed on the Gen III as I didn't like the interior. By the way, Consumer Reports also favors the Gen II over the Gen III.

    Yup, tell her that!

Now, if she likes the V (minivan thingy), then she should get it. She likes what looks good (in her eyes)...you can't change that! Women are like that!

Let's say she drives 12,000 miles a year.

    Prius V gets 42 mpg..............Prius 3G gets 50 mpg

After 12,000 miles, Prius V uses 285 gallons of gas.

After 12,000 miles, Prius II uses 240 gallons of gas

    Difference = 45 gallons

Prices for regular gasoline = $3.90 per gallon (picking a random dollar value to be in between today's gas prices and next few months')

So, after 12,000 miles, the driver of Prius 3G saves $175.50 vs. Prius V driver...or about $14 per month. If she drives less than 12k miles/year, then the "savings" will be even less.

Since you'll inherit her estate, tell her to buy a Gen 3 Prius because she'll enjoy seeing you drive it because there's no greater maternal pleasure than seeing her son happy. I'm saying all this as I'm under the impression you're the good son. :biggrin1:

Have her keep her current one and get another Gen. 2 for your brother? Or get a v or a Gen. 3, then again there is also the HS 250h. What does she think of the HS? HS's are discounted here.

Mac, the minor cosmetic are really not that important - she'll get used to or over them in a short time.

The important things are - is it comfortable, and practical for her.

The 3rd gen does have better separation of controls - in 2nd gen she won't be able to see the MPG bar graph if she gets nav and is using it :)

Ahhhh, whut. Methinks it is generally agreed the 3rd gen is a nice improvement over 2nd.

Nothing to feel bad about. When the 4th gen comes out, it will be improved and the rivalry will continue (or Prius v, c, PHV, etc...)

    Dear Macmaster's Mommy,

Buy the car you are happy with, do not let your son guilt you into getting the car he wants, YOU have to live with it.

I have a nice Gen II 2009 Prius V you can have for free if you get me a 2011 Prius five. or a Prius v, I am easy.

    Yours,

    JimboPalmer
