$40K Price tag- Fair Guess for initial roll-out?

If thats how they roll then I will be purchasing something else...and I think a lot of others will too.

I'm already looking at the all electric tesla 4dr sedan @50k. 170 miles on a single charge. much better car in my opinion. however, if the prius is in the low 30's it will be a tough coin toss for me.

 

Have they announced pricing on those yet, I had heard they wer going to be $60k?

I don't think anybody should buy a car thinking that they are going to save money. A car is never an investment, whether you buy a MINI Cooper equipped like a Prius 2 for the same price, or whether you buy a Jetta Diesel which cost more than a Prius 2. A compared Hyundai Elantra sedan GLS with Nav is just under $20,000 or a Mercedes G55 AMG starts at $124,750 dollars. I think that it is unrealistic to think that the plug-In is going to be priced about $25,000, unless maybe a barebone Prius 1 with the Plug. And, speaking of MINI Cooper, I just watched this review of the MINI Countryman!

Also, I do not agree with the so-called "Hybrid Price Premium, How long it is going to take to recoup the difference" since people only apply it to hybrid vehicles and not other vehicles. A BMW 328i has an MSRP of 34,600 and a 335d(Diesel) has an MSRP of 44,150. Someone may make the argument of how long it would take the 335d to make up almost 10,000 dollars difference from the 328i at current diesel price/gallon to pay for the difference.
BTW, If you build a 335d with similarly Prius 5 package without the ATP package, the price quickly goes up beyond $55,000.

 

I'm thinking 25 - 28K. How could they justify 40K?
Not going to get 30K unless they have it with a lot of options, and that will seriously limit demand on the vehicle.

naw for me just pure geek. Main reason I purchased the Gen 2 I have now.

I'd have to agree. Toyota has never just intro'd a base model anything hybrid without some serious electrical/electronic gadgetry to go with it.

Never used TCO before, never will in the future. My main concern is the same as any car I've ever purchased, how soon can I pay it off with as much stuff as I can afford.

Don't know about the well heeled part, nor that much on the environmental part. I just know the geek part. Of course this has some competition, to me, with the CT. Hmmm, luxury or geek. If I go with luxury, how long will I have the car before my wife decides she'd rather have it.

 

i hope you're right, but i think it'll end up in the lower 30's rather than the mid to upper 20's

 

I'm thinking limiting demand is going to be one of their goals initially. They are going to be seriously supply constrained for a long time, they'll price it as high as they can and still sell them all. They'd have big PR problems if suddenly there was demand for millions of them and they couldn't make more than 20,000.

 

at priusfreunde.de someone posted toyota said they'll make the same price for the plug-in as now for the nimh.

here in austria it starts around € 27.000,- incl. taxes and due to the falling li-ion battery prices they could really make it.
that would be a killerprice for the opel ampera/chevy volt... (they say its going to cost € 40.000,-)

 

Toyota has already disavowed that report.

 

I would agree with the above and add my own guess:
1. A Prius III with its own unique alloy wheel to distinguish it from the herd.
2. Options in Packages: only Premium and Tech packages.
3. I doubt Advanced Tech will be available in the plug in for the reason so many in this forum already stated: $40,000. So, a refreshed Prius III + alloy wheel, starting at $29,990 plus option packages. My 0.02 cents!

 

If it is above $30k, I think the Ford Focus EV might be in my future.

1. A true EV with $7500 Fed Tax Credit + $5k CA tax credit = cheaper than Prius PHV
2. An Austin Martin looking Wagon. How can you hate that look?
3. A very nice home quick charger that can be plug into a 220V for $1500. Another $1k tax credit = $500 total.
4. Oh. And no more oil changes, radiator flushes, etc.

It'll be a Prius 4 or a IV with some unique additions, like LED headlights to save power and the heated seats for the winter and solar roof option to keep the battery cool. Both of these tend to help out with the climate control which would put a dent in the overall range.

 

I could see that too. I'll bet basic PHV is priced a little over a plain Prius V. PHV sticker price of about $32k to 34k might happen.

 

Market prices now are irrelevant, we'll have to see how things have changed by the time this gets out. I saw a 2008 Prius today at a local dealership for $24,800. Didn't even have leather.
