Prius are hot right now, no doubt. Any possibility of another shortage like in past years? Will the tsunami have any effect on 2012 prius release dates?

    Possible? Yes
    Probable? Yes

Fall of this year is the earliest they expect to get back into full production. So if everything goes as planned, a few more months. If you look at the current selection you will see very few being imported and tons being sold.

Logic dictates a shortage and waiting list if things continue.

This maybe just a Japan thing. I've always said that the Prius should be able to act like a home generator. With the tsunami and resulting Japan energy distribution problems (one side of the country is one freq, the other another,) they say that Toyota is listening. You should be at least able to run your refrigerator for a couple of days off of your hybrid. Maybe an inverter option is something you will see migrated outside of Japan.

That's my opinion on the long term effect of the tsunami. Short term, all I know is that I don't see any for sale by owner Prius 3's on Craigslist in my area.

Well, they've announced that production will be at 70% June through August and that the USA will only get 12,000 per month. Given that sales of the Prius have been above that December, February, March (18,605) and April (12k+ due to supply problems), I'm thinking that unless there's a sudden drop in gas prices there'll be a shortage until full production is back.

And it can. Many people around here use them in winter storm blackouts.

Last summer we got hit by some severe thunderstorms and lost power at home for about 2 days. During that time I used my Prius and an inverter to charge my phone and ipod and run a couple of fans and stereo - it worked perfectly.

We are there. 3 dealers have a total of 5 cars. The AAA price is above MSRP across the entire line. I don't believe Toyota announced production dates for the 2012 MY so they can't be affected.

I stopped by a big Toyota dealer near Oak coliseum. They had only 2 new Prius, a V and a II, and two used ones.

Some dealers who have no idea when your preferred car will arrive may be doing waiting lists. Some want a deposit, others do not. Some dealers don't do waiting lists.

Just got my 2011 Prius 4 yesterday. I ordered it in late February. Dealer said I was lucky and availability was going to be tight for several more months.
