Holy crap, Wayne used 0.04 gallons of gas in the plug-in over 24.3 miles(!!).

Haha, that's a great job by the VW, but to "win" it used almost twice as much diesel fuel as second place used with 87 gas. Seems a weird way to score a hypermiling contest!

I think it said later in the thread that the VW was not a diesel.

Different ways of scoring were indeed discussed in that thread. I happen to think that the scoring based on percentage over EPA MGP number is pretty good at evaluating hypermiling skills. So the VW driver beat us Prius drivers fair and square.

So I'm confused, which of the Prius cars on the table (last photo) is not a PHEV. What was the best non-plugin Prius result?

The very top Prius listing (second car from the top altogether) was the top Prius, non plug-in. The only PHEV was Wayne it looks like, and that was just for demo purposes.

I thought this was the normal way to score hypermiling. Wayne's website does it. So does the Lacey MPG Rally out here. This helps emphasize that anyone can improve their fuel efficiency, even without changing vehicles.

This does put the Prius at a disadvantage, because its EPA rating already includes some of the efficiency improvements that hypermilers can apply to nonhybrids. As a % of EPA at ordinary road speeds, my Prius cannot do as well as the old Subaru, which doesn't do as well as the ancient Honda that my Prius replaces.

But these contests also display actual MPG, rubbing in what the new technology can do without serious driver effort.
