It may be best if we never let Steve Martin know there is a combination of a chainsaw and dentist drill.

Amusing that the gas car at the pump is a volt.

The ironic thing, of course, is that everything depicted in that ad is actually true (to a lesser extent). ;)

You mean you folks didn't like the polar bear?
    :p

    Me neither ! ! !
Now THAT's marketing at it funny funniest.

On a really sad note though - this ad is eerily closer to truth than some realize:

The renault one was a hoot too - I loved the candy bar machine. Doesn't Nissan own renault?

I'd love to see uranium fuel rods connected to that dentist's drill. And a coal fired microwave. And a hydroelectric powered coffemaker. And a natural gas powered alarm clock.

    What a hydrofraking stupid premise!

The Stirling engine powered fan wasn't stupid. In the late 19th and early 20th century electricity usually wasn't available out in the boonies. It was an effective solution to a problem.

The otherway round - actually they cross own each other. But we should really think of them as the same group of companies with the same CEO.

    From wiki ...

Yeah, Nissan had a near death (near bankruptcy) experience around 1999. Renault bought a controlling stake and installed Carlos Ghosn (rhymes with phone) as CEO. He turned the company around into making record profits and got rid of its debt.

I posted some links about him at http://priuschat.com/forums/other-c...eo-nissan-renault-interview-charlie-rose.html. Unfortunately the detnews story is gone. I believe it had a bar graph showing how massive the losses were, followed by the turnaround. However, the text is up at titantalk.com (see my link).

Totally random: If you didn't know, there is also http://www.renaultsamsungm.com/main/index.jsp! I first heard about it from http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generation-maxima-2000-2003/151042-samsung-maxima.html. At the time of the 5th gen Maxima (spans 00-03 model years), Renault Samsung Motors was building 4th gen Maximas (spans MY 95-99) but badging them as the Samsung SM5. There was even an article about the SM5 (back then still a 4th gen Maxima) as a taxi at http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/02_40/b3802159.htm

edit: I found http://www.autointell.com/news-2000/May-2000/May-23-00-p9.htm mentioning a loss of $6.4 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000. It's confirmed by http://www.nissan-global.com/EN/DOCUMENT/PDF/AR/1999/ar1999.pdf.

I was in Santiago Chile a couple of weeks before the earthquake last year. The hotel I was staying in had nice looking fleet of SM5 Samsungs.

you seem to be against any electrically driven vehicles. this is evident by this post and the ones in the leaf getting 132miles per charge. why don't you mention the solar and wind source? anyone can have a solar roof charging up their EV but how many can drill their own oil and refine it in their back yard? how many can grow their own corn and make their own E85? can you? there are solar companies where you can lease a complete solar system with no out of pocket expenses, just a monthly fee. it's possible to drive an EV on completely self sustainable renewable energy cheaply. can you say the same with gasoline?

The proposed Leaf commercial is very very funny, but could *back-fire*. Skilbovia's response was on target (and concise) as far as being the valid other side of the story. If aired, it might be a disservice to the already confused public.
