+100. Kid nailed it. The first time I sat in a Prius was in 2004 when a mom drove me and my classmates to a jazz festival in Monterey. Since then I was a huge fan of the Prius. Never thought I'd necessarily own one (I was only in high school) but at the time I loved what Toyota did. Throughout the years I eagerly anticipated the new Prius. When I saw the 3rd Gen in 2009, it was an unemphatic "that's it?" from me. So I bought a Gen II....

It's no joke that Toyota spent a lot of time on the Gen II Prius, probably more time than they spent on the Gen III. That's the part that still irks me just a little bit. I think the Gen III is a better car of course, but the Gen II is called iconic for a reason.

I am glad I have a Gen II. I haven't driven a Gen III, but I get a 'meh' feeling about it.

I think the third generation Prius was rushed into market because the new "supposed-to-be" Prius fighter was on the horizon. Didn't give them a chance to really think every detail through.

It's still a cool car, don't get me wrong. It just didn't "move" me. When I seen it, I did what MacMaster did, "That's it?" Like I said, don't think I'm trying to talk bad about it, people love it or hate it. I'm just stating my own opinion. If you read my posts from the past, you'll see that I had a third generation Prius for a few months, but I actually sold it and went back to a second generation because I just didn't like it as much. Just little things like when you would slide back the armrest to revel the cup holder, it would hit the legs of someone sitting in the back seat.

The floating center console was a bad design to me, my knees always rubbed against it. Over time, I can tell that it wears out the texture of the dash because when I was at my dealer a few months back, I looked at a used 2010 Prius with 30,000 miles on it and you could see where the previous owners knees rubbed on the center console because the texture was rubbed off. Rear seat room, in my 100% honest opinion, and I'm not the only one to notice this, has decreased too. Head room has went up though from the peak of the roof being moved back several inches, but leg room has dropped a few inches.

Just to make sure I was correct, I even put both second generation and third generation side-by-side and first, got in the drivers seat to adjust the seat where I was comfortable and would normally drive in both cars. Then I got out and got in the back seat of both and compared. The second generation had a few inches more legroom and thigh support in the back, yet less head room than the third generation.

Lastly, the interior of the third generation isn't as rugged. In the 06'-09' model year Prius, the dash had a nice "wood grain" like texture to it, but it wasn't a hard plastic, it was plastic underneath, but it was padded with a material of some sort. The glove compartment doors felt beefier and stronger, and the interior just seems a little flimsy. To ME it does.

From what i have read the plug in prius will shock the world. Instead of an electric motor assisting an ice it will be the other way around an ice assisting an electric. Come on 2012.

    You're kind of correct. :)

The plug-in Prius will have an electric only range of about 14 miles (on a good day) at speeds below 65mph. Once the plug-in battery is depleted or you drive over 65mph, it turns into a regular Prius and switches from the plug-in battery pack to the normal Ni-MH battery pack found in all Prii.

Other than that, I think the styling and design won't change much from that of the outgoing third generation. :(

    We are referring to the design of the car. Before I saw the Gen III, I was expecting something like this;

So you can imagine my disappointment. I know it's a concept car and we almost never see concepts go into production, but since the Gen II Prius was so revolutionary, there was always a hope that maybe the new model would again resemble something so singular. Rather, the first time I saw the Gen III, the only thing that popped out at me was the blue Toyota emblem. Now isn't that a bit sad?

I may be in the minority in this thread, but I prefer the exterior design of III over II. That concept design has them both beat, though. ;-)

Well, if this is the best that 2nd gen fanboy can bring up, then the 3rd gen is pretty damn good!

(BTW, just me, but if i wanted to start a thread like this, i would have done it in the 2nd gen forum...but that's just me.)

Do you think that making a car that appeals to wider population easy to do? Would the 2nd gen still be "iconic" if it were faced with the current competition?

At some point, other manufacturers would catch up to Toyota...and right now, there is a tech ceiling...waiting for the next big development. Would you want Toyota to keep waiting and letting 2nd gen keep going with the current competition? 2nd gen would get killed!

Weren't sales dropping like a rock near the end of the 2nd gen lifecycle?? Iconic? Back in the day when it came out...but now, it is yesterday's news. No matter how some 2nd gen fanboys may put it, it is an outdated fad vehicle with outdated technology that only appealed to a limited population.

I would not even bother buying that crappy design...somehow it reminds me of Mr. Pig in Toy Story....

Haha, aren't we so alike? I thought that was going to be the third generation too! People are forgetting that the Prius didn't become a success and sell over a million because it's easy to drive, people liked the uniqueness too, it was a major plus. It looked so apart from other cars. That's what got me into the Prius years ago.

Boy, lets get something straight, okay?
First off, I clearly stated "in my opinion". Enough said.

Second, does it look like I care if people laughed at me? It shows your ignorance. Yes, there are advancements that are innovative to the third generation, I'm not at all saying that the third generation should have been more like the second generation, I'm saying that I wish Toyota would have come up with another "WOW!" inspiring car.

Yes, all these little nit picks add into one big thing.

On that note, maybe I do carry three passengers in the back, you don't know me, just listen to yourself. Yes, when you slide the armrest back to reveal the cup holder, it hits the rear passengers knees. Also, at one point in time did I say that the seating position in the second generation was more comfortable or better? Looks like you're starting to pull some stuff out of your a**.

As I said before, the Gen III is a better car overall than the Gen II. If both designs debuted at the same time, the Gen III would probably sell more, as it's design appeals to more people. But that's not the point of this discussion. The point we're trying to make is that the delta of Gen I to Gen II was greater than the delta Gen II to Gen III. That's all...

The difference is that you nitpick on the small stuff...while totally ignoring that the 2nd gen Prius had MAJOR FLAWS that limited its popularity. The 3rd gen fixed that to broaden its appeal. And while the 1st to 2nd gen jump was big, you have to realize that 1st gen was really a first attempt. You will see that the 4th gen will be less of an improvement...and so on. In other words, as the Prius gets near "perfection" (aka mass appeal), you will see less "striking" improvements. Why is this hard to understand, even for a kid like you and Mac?

Again, your opinion should have been on the 2nd gen forum, more than 3rd gen forum. In other words, on this forum, your comments seem more annoying. Get it?

I'm afraid this might be true. Hindsight it was probably silly of me to expect the new 3rd Gen Prius to be so revolutionary. No car company has a magic wand to make every revision extraordinary. Toyota took the practical and safe route as any logical company would. On a side note, I'm not sure the Prius may ever home in on "perfection." Sometimes car designs actually take a step back in the revision process. Look at the new Corolla.

Why do people insist on arguing and getting nasty over someones opinion???? Its an opinion with no anger or hatred in the text but certain people insist on making it a pissing contest. Everyone needs to relax because in the grand scheme of things most people would say that are Prii regardless of which gen it is are pieces of sh*t. So the guys who think there sh*t don't stink get over yourself your car is an econoegg in my opinion :)
