    Hi -

I have decided I cant take the stock prius stereo anymore in my Prius II, so I am going to try and do this myself and have some very basic questions:

    1. I am getting conflicting information on what will fit in the front doors. I think I want the Infinity Reference 6032SI, which is a 6.5" speaker, but I am hearing that the fronts are 6x9. Im confused.

    2. This adapter that everyone speaks of in other threads - is this something that comes with the speakers - or do I need to order seperately?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Glad to hear you are going to try it! Are you going to also upgrade the HU?

    1. They are 6x9s. You can also install 6.5 by using an adapter.

    2. Depends if the speakers you buy come with them(kits). Otherwise you need to order them separately. The original speakers stand out from the door about 1.5". More than likely your new speakers will have to sit on an adapter in order to clear the window components in the door (magnets).

There are many photos in threads here.

I would *read the threads* first....

I had the Infinity up front ($100) - liked them a lot. I then got MB Quart ($120?), and they were better (moving IR to the back). I then added a 3.5" Pioneer squaker (with bass blocker - $40), and now it really fills in up front...

No need for an external amp in my setup (Pioneer Z120) - fronts are wired in parallel - and happen to match well...

You need 6x9 to 6.5" adapters.

If you buy them from Crutchfield, mounting adapters and wiring harness adapters are included.

There have been some threads and instructions in the Gen III audio forum on installing speakers in Gen III doors.

    Here's the one I did.

As a matter of fact, I am going to replace the HU!!

    I am going with:

    1. Clarion CX501
    2. Sirius SC-C1 adapter
    3. Metra ASWC steering wheel adapter
    4. Speakers (I think the infinity's mentioned above)

The reason I ask about the adapters, is at Crutchfield 2 sets of my speakers (with the adapters) would be $150, while I can get them on Amazon for about $115. But I dont know if Amazon has the adapters or not, and then I read about wiring harnesses for the speakers.

I have read a lot of threads here - and it is really the only thing giving me the confidence that I can do this! But I want to get clarification before I do the wrong thing.

    Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the clarification on Crutchfield.

On your link, you did modifications to the adapters. Is that necessary? I dont know if I am that handy (besides all of the other great stuff you did!).

I just want to get better sounding speakers in there, as easy as possible.

    :)

You don't need to modify the adapters for the front doors, however they aren't just a bolt on operation. You need to drill out the rivets that fasten the stock speaker to remove it. You can then attach the adapter to the door with sheet metal screws which requires a small amount of handiness. There is no need to use riv-nuts like I did.

The rear speakers do need the adapters modified, but the rear speakers don't make much improvement unless you are in the back seat.

    Nice looking unit.

I am glad I went with video (see my AV Upgrade link in signature) so I could later hook up a reverse camera. It is a bit more cost but a very nice accessory to have with the limited rear view of the Prius.

Good luck and don't be afraid to ask any questions.

I actually am having second thoughts.

I started looking at the Pioneer DVD head unit AVHP4300DVD. I think the backup camera will be very good to have.

Im going to have to do some research to see how hard it is to run that cable to the back of the car.

Thanks everyone for all of the help!!

Good deal. The hardest part of running the cable is getting it though the rubber thingy that protects the wires as they leave the cab and enter the hatch but even that was too bad. Just have to take it small chunk at a time. I would start with the HU, speakers (including the dash as xs mentioned) and then camera. Piece of cake! :)

Why not using a wireless rear camera with receiver? Simply use 12V from the plate lights to feed the camera and transmitter. The receiver sits close to the headunit and has its own 12V. Not a lot to wire :)

They don't look OEM - and many here have had issues with wireless reception... Wiring isn't *that* hard. The only issue is putting the cable through the rubber on the rear hatch. Outside of that, wiring is simple.

While we are on the subject, are cameras themselves pretty universal?

In other words, do I have to match a specific camera to a specific head unit, or does basically any camera work with any head unit?

RRolFF - I saw that you posted in another thread about your backup camera. You said you got it on EBAY, and posted a pic, but I couldnt find if you ever gave a model or a way to find it elsewhere - or how much you paid for it.

    Thanks

    UPDATE!!!!

Because of all of you guys suggestions here, I have decided to break the bank and get in way over my head not only in my wallet but with my tool kit too!!

Here is my system, ordered today:

    1. Sony XAV-62BT DVD double din - ordered from Sonic Electronix with dash kit and harness for $333.
    2. PAC SWI-PSV1 steering wheel controls - Amazon $45.
    3. Sony / Sirius satellite package - Amazon $87.
    4. Remote Control - Amazon $27.
    5. Infinity Reference 6032si (with adapters!!) from Crutchfield $150 (2 sets for front and rear).

Only thing left is the backup cam - and I will order that right after I get some advice on what to get!

Thanks everyone, I will post pics when I am done. It will either be in the service department fixing what I broke, or I will be a very happy girl!

I've installed this on a 07 RAV4, no problems so far (transmitter works on 2.4GHz). The receiver was connected to a stock Nav 9006 and looks completely OEM :) Running the wires from the hatch or rear door to the Nav unit is not a big problem but a hurdle for many people. I think it's a good alterative as long as you take a good quality device.

I am having some real frustration with the selection of the backup camera.

Some are 10 bucks on ebay, and some are 250 bucks - and Im having a real hard time figuring out what the difference is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Ebay cameras look OEM, and have great color detail (you could tell if a penny on the ground is heads or tails).

They can be found by searching ebay - camry camera - they look like this, and typically cost around $35 - $40 delivered. Keep in mind - the ones from China (that most here buy) take 2 weeks to arrive... Not sure if the US ones are the same or not. This cam fits in the existing opening - in fact, it snaps in (if you pull the snaps out to lock it in place). I also put in a little hotmelt for good measure....
