I have a "lifetime" contract with Sirius, purchased about 4 years ago. Now just purchased my new Prius and I was thrilled to have the SAT radio factory installed. HOWEVER.....I just found out yesterday, that the SAT is XM and I have a Sirius contract.

Now -- I am struggling with Toyota to install a Sirius receiver, as I was told by SiriusXM would be no charge within 30 days. Merge? when I said that to them, the rep laughed at me!! Toyota, of course, didn't know the difference .....and now I'm stuck.

    Anyone else with this problem?

The receivers are different. I think the company is the same?

"The company in its current incarnation was formed following the acquisition of XM Satellite Radio, Inc. by Sirius Satellite Radio, Inc. on July 29, 2008"

Everyone is under the assumption that they are one company.....so why 2 receivers.

I'm ticked because now I have to get a XM receiver, after I asked that question at least 6 times in the car purchase process!

What is best way to go about this?

    Thanks so much.

They used to be different companies and so they each had their separate receivers. Perhaps they use different satellites but they now use the same channels?

I don't really know why they did what they did.

Because the XM and Sirius systems aren't compatible. If they changed to only one type of receiver (XM or Sirius), then either former XM or Sirius customers would have had to buy no receivers.

They share the audio for some channels but they don't transmit on the same channels or with the same type of signal.

Don't you think Toyota should share this info with customers when buying the car.....or at least give the customer the option of the receiver?

I'm stuck now with having to fork out over $400 to make it Sirius compatible.

Considering average sales droids are ignorant of lot's of common features on the cars they peddle, that would be asking a bit much.:D

You might look into something like this
Toyota Lexus and Scion SIRIUS Connect Package | TSS-Radio

If you still trying to solve this through the dealer, go try some independent shops. Looks like it should be well under $300 installed. Or it could be yours for $140 as a do it yourself project. Good luck!

Sirius and XM have merged. Sirius-XM is unwilling to transfer your lifetime subscription from a Sirius receiver to a XM receiver. Your complaint is with Sirius-XM and not with Toyota.

Toyota is not responsible for knowing the fine print of your individual lifetime subscription plan.

I'm not sure Sirius-XM is currently selling lifetime subscriptions. Lifetime was always limited to your original receiver. It was your receiver's lifetime, not the customers lifetime. There was an exception which allowed you to transfer service, for a fee, to a replacement receiver a limited number of times. My guess is Sirius-XM isn't looking to expand transfer options. You might find out how much it would cost to transfer your subscription to a replacement Sirius receiver, assuming you're still allowed to transfer your service, before you try to put a Sirius receiver in your Prius.

Thanks for your reply. You keep saying "SiriusXM." As I was told directly from Sirius....they are merged, but only in the "financial department" -- not technology wise. It has nothing to do with my lifetime subscription. I have had my lifetime subscription for 5 years now, and it includes 2 transfers of equip. The problem here is the technology for XM is completely different from Sirius, and anyone can have this problem, even if you have a month-to-month program. You'd have to pay for a whole new contract. I've talked to others who have had this problem and are very upset they had to pay extra money, and even one cancelled the subscription.

This really is an educational warning to those who have satellite subscription and are changing vehicles.

The problem is contractual as well as technical. SiriusXM could easily solve your problem by transferring your lifetime contract, but they have elected not to. Note the word "elected". There is nothing technical to prevent SirusXM from transferring your contract, but they don't want to set that precedent.

Not just the financial department. The music channels are the same. Sirius-XM recently even standardized most of the channel numbers. The 60s channel on Sirius is identical to the 60s channel on XM.

qbee42--Got it right. Sirius-XM has decided that contractually they don't have to let you transfer your lifetime subscription to a XM receiver and they won't do that.
