Lease buyout intentions up for some Japanese models

    The Detroit News

People leasing some hard-to-find Japanese models are increasingly inclined to buy out their leases, according to a survey by LeaseTrader.com.

Since January, lease buyout intentions from shoppers have risen as high as 13.6 percent among Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Infiniti and Lexus, the leasing specialist said.

Some Japanese models, particularly those made only in Japan, such as the Toyota Prius hybrid, have been in short supply because of output disruptions caused by a massive earthquake in March.

LeaseTrader said the biggest increases in U.S. lease buyout intentions were seen among people leasing the Prius, up 13.6 percent; the Camry, up 13.2 percent, the Honda Accord, up 12.1 percent, the Nissan Sentra, up 11.2 percent, and Lexus IS, up 9.6 percent.

"Car shoppers who take over someone's remaining lease on the LeaseTrader.com marketplace have the same lease options available … including the ability to buy out the lease contract at the end of terms," said Sergio Stiberman, CEO of LeaseTrader.com.

You'd have to be nuts not to buy out a Prius lease at the moment even if you were just going to turn around and sell it, basically.

I suppose a buy-out is relative to lease-end terms. I have not followed Prius leasing programs, but if the buy-out is Fair Market Value, it may not be such a good deal. If buy-out pricing is pre-determined from lease inception, it just might be a bargain. Looks like Prius buyers may have access to a new crop of Toyota Certified Pre-Owned Prius. Either way, a lot of Prius lessees will soon be in the market for another vehicle.

It is on every lease I'm aware of set at time of lease sign. My 2010 was given $16,900 buy out after 3 years, or $15,050 if I did the 18k/year lease. A three year old prius now with 54k--and note that's a last gen, too--is worth much more than $15k right now.

According to KBB.com a 2009 Certified Pre-Owned with 55,000 miles may be worth $20-22K. KBB pricing was based on my Carolina zip code, and excellent condition. Sounds like opportunity knocking for some Prius lessees.
