Interesting concept. After checking out the bypass filters on the Amsoil site, I am tending to think that the Amsoil EAO09 oil filter might be the better solution. The EAO09 appears to provide better filtration at a $5.00 premium over the cost of the Mobil 1 filter. (I have yet to check what the cost of the OEM filter is; if the OEM filter is priced comparable to the EAO09, it would likely be a no-brainer.) Fitting a dual filter bypass system seems like something of a bit of overkill.

I think a dual filter bypass system is overkill if you are talking about 5,000 mile oil change intervals. However, if you start pushing it to 10,000 or 15,000 miles, I think it becomes a prudent investment. Of course, I am not considering doing this while the car is under the Toyota warranty, but will seriously investigate it when I get beyond that point.

For what it is worth. I used an oil bypass filter on a 84 Olds Ciera 4 banger. I did not do any UOA's. The car died of oil blowby before the one year or 25,000 or 15,000 mile period. I changed the regular filter in the one year period per instructions. So I'll never go that route again. Maybe if you drive a truck it is worth it or have easy access to UOA's. It wasn't going to save that much money anyway and how often have you heard of someone getting rid of a car b/c the engine wore out. Usually someother expensive repair does it or a collection of petty stuff.

Interesting. Amsoil has a 1988 Olds Cutlass Cierra, 3.8L engine, with 280,000+ miles and a bypass filtration system featured on their site. The feed for the unit was was teed off the oil sending unit and the return was to the oil fill cap. Was yours plumbed in a similar fashion?

Install was not as above. It was an Amsoil install kit that relocated the regular filter and added the bypass right next to it. A fitting installed on the OEM filter mount, hoses came off the fitting and the filters were inline of that. Hope that makes sense. Maybe it was bad luck but it wasn't worth the hassle even if it did work.

Amsoil is great oil. But at 10k oil change intervals you are just giving them your money. Mobil 1 ep or even regular mobil 1 will do a great job at this interval. Prius engine will do a over half a million miles with good old toyota oil every 5k.

According to law of diminishing returns any good synthetic will get you over 500k on a prius motor. Just change it before 10k, change a good air filter & drive it like a prius.

All the extra money and effort spend on amsoil is only used for your love for prius. No real measurable difference over mobil 1. Infact you will end up spending more an gas to find amsoil than you will save using amsoil.

Toyota has their own synthetic and it is half the price of others. I believe Exon produces it for them. $6.95 a liter in Canada, should be less in the US. Hal

You realize of course that your car doesn't require a synthetic at all, right?

Read the label carefully, it may be, and I don't know that it is, a synthetic blend. Meaning it has synthetic and Dino oil in it, as opposed to something that is 100% synthetic. Typically that is what you see when there is that kind of huge price difference. If it is 100% synthetic, then great deal!

    Hi Hal,

I got it for $5 something at OpenRoad Toyota Port Moody part department. Don't have receipt handy, but I believe it was under $5.50. The Canadian supply is in liters too. Either price very good ;)

Somebody was having a brain bubble: the Matrix and Prius are indicated as 5 cylinder engines.

    Hi Mendel:
I purchased mine in Victoria Mendel! I guess the Ferry trip ads to the cost? I was happy to pay $6.95 as I have been paying almost $10.00 for Pennzoil Platinum. Hal

Maybe that is part of the "performance package" now being offered?!?! :D
