Took my 2007 Toyota Prius today to a Jiffy Lube for an oil change (a Jiffy Lube that I've been to several times, with the same care, and have always received good service . . .they're very professional).

As soon as I drove the vehicle off of the Jiffy Lube lot, my car broke down (i was barely able to pull in to a nearby shopping center).

At first, it seemed to be an issue with the transmission, b/c I was not able to put the car into D or R (would only go into neutral). The car would turn on/off fine.

Then, about an hour later, the car wouldn't turn on at all. The dash was completely black, nothing would come on, seem to be an electrical battery issue.

I was able to jump start it (using one of those jump boxes), to turn the vehicle on. It seems now that the vehicle is incapable of turning on without a jump start. Dead battery, right?

Once on, the transmission problem persists. Will only go into Neutral, cannot be put into D or R. Is this related to the battery, or some other electrical issue? Could it be that I have two independent problems (a battery and a transmission issue?) Is it just a crazy coincidence that this occurred after my oil change? (The Jiffy Lube guys came out to my car and inspected it, tried to service it, no joy. they claim that all they did was change the oil. I tend to believe them, b/c they've been so good in the past).

The car is only at 81K. Is now sitting with the dealer for inspection/service on monday. I cant wait to get that quote, FML.

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your 12v battery needs to be replaced. There is no transmission in the Prius.

thanks. What's the cost of a 12V battery??? Should it be failing at 80K, or is this unusual???

I have been told on PC that 12V should be changed every 5 years or so. So, if you haven't changed it before, may be this is time. What I know is that the battery at the dealer costs $140 plus labor. There are a bunch of threads here on 12V batteries.

The OP's 12 volt isn't that old yet but he has quite a few miles so it might be due. That's why he should test it. If it's been drained flat at few times, then it's even more likely it's needs replacement.

There's been some recent confusion and issues regarding the 12 volt price. See http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...92860-new-12v-battery-part-28800-21171-a.html. It seems that the price problem has been fixed.
