Month ago or so I posted asking about memory foam mattresses. A few people responded commenting on their Tempurpedics and thanks for that.

I have a delivery scheduled for Serta's new iComfort memory foam set and the plan is to exchange out my 2 week old Stearns and Foster set.

But, then I see reviews like the following, commenting on their experience with a memory foam mattress -

"A couple of months ago I decided to splurge and order one of those 'great' memory foam mattresses. The day after I started sleeping on it I started having health problems and it was getting worse. TO keep it short: I went on the internet and found that tons of people are having serious health problems from memory foam, due to all the chemicals that are being put into it for required flame retardation. Some of those chemicals are toxic and cancer inducing, ..."

7th post down here - The Natural Mattress Store - San Rafael, CA

Can't say I've found tons of reports from mem foam owners having health issues, BUT,

I can say, the couple times I've tried memory foam mattress toppers, they had a terribly foul smell, really, really bad if you stick your nose up close.

So, what is your experience with memory foam mattresses?

Thanks, really, I can use all the help. Don't want to waste my 1 time exchange priviledge on a possibly bad experience.

I don't quite know what you are looking for but I have owned a TP mattress for 6 years now. I am very happy with it as is my wife. I am currently missing it as I am away from home. I do not recall any overly strong outgassing and or odor when it was new. To be frank my Prius had worse outgassing smells than the mattress did or does. Since day one I have kept it covered with a waterproof mattress cover, I am not sure how that may have or does affect the mattresses breathability? I have not suffered any ill heath or had any medical problems that I would attribute to the TP mattress.

No flame intended, but if you are that concerned about a memory foam mattress, you shouldn't get one. I doubt you will stop worrying about it after you have one delivered.

We have had out Temperpedic for about a year and love it, I have never slept so well, but I don't think I would be sleeping well if I were concerned about it's toxicity.

the natural mattress store clearly has no financial interest in the competition's "toxic chemicals" - right? always maintain vigilance for biases like this.

we bought our tempur-pedic about 7 years ago. i don't recall any outgassing issues- i do remember it took about 3 days to get used to the thing. and i know i have a hard time sleeping on anything else, and it's much better for my husband's back problems than anything else we've tried.

then again, i never have paid much attention to the toxicity-mongers. i deal with an operational definition of toxicity (rather than the handwaving, universal kind)- since everything can be toxic depending on dose and potency, and we live in a world that is nothing BUT chemicals.

I slept on a no-name foam mattress (probably not a "memory" foam) on the floor for about 20 years. I'm very sensitive to chemical smells, and I noticed none. I quite liked it. It was very comfortable. I was too poor back then to afford anything else. Now I have a real bed with a conventional mattress and box spring. I like it also. It, too, is very comfortable.

btw, all these questions I have and I've been sleeping on a Tempurpedic Symphony pillow for about 3 years now. It's memory foam and closest to my intakes :) btw, it is the best pillow I've ever had.

    --------------------------------

Ok, fair enough. I can see how 'natural' or organic mattress makers have an interest to bash others. Organic mattress makers are few and far between.

But, here's another question, seriously ....

does the firmness of memory foam change much with varying ambient temperature in the room, like between Winter / Summer, or does it tend to sink in more as you're sleeping on it through the night?

I've laid on the one I've got scheduled for delivery a good 25 minutes in the store and I don't detect any twist in my spine or anything else bad.

I know it's only a mattress and the worst that could happen is I lose 15% restocking fee if it doesn't work out. Only I can really decide though.

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

A week ago, I tried a memory foam 2" topper by Sleep Innovations for one day. The chemical smell when sniffing up close was seriously foul. I was trying it to help out a situation with my right shoulder - old injury. Turns out I've been sticking my right arm out to the side while sleeping on side. Corrected that, so it's better. Right not as good as left though, never will be.

If you have your mattress indoors, the temperature issues seem exaggerated. Our bedroom is never below 68F when we go to bed and never above 80F, it's between 70F and 78F well over 90% of the time. If we slept on the mattress out in the backyard, the temperature differences would be much bigger:D

I have never noticed a difference in firmness based on temperature.

What is "memory" foam, anyway? It seems to me that a mattress that retained your shape would be less comfortable. And if you move during the night, any "remembered" shape from your previous position would be wrong. So what is it?

The "memory" is the mattress shape, not the impression of your body. It's just a fancy way of saying "a firm foam that doesn't permanently deform".

Many pictures show a handprint in the foam after hand is lifted off. That's what they're talking about - the foam 'remembers' what was on it. Trying to emphasize how much the foam conforms.

I have had a Tempurpedic mattress for quite a while now - 7 or 8 years - and also bought one of their pillows a few years ago and have never had any issue with allergies. I would agree that they have a bit of a smell for a few days once you get it, but that fades fairly quickly.

As for other allergies - I have the standard seasonal ones that many have and years ago in college they switched the carpeting over the Christmas break and all spring I had a stuffy nose and nagging cough - I can not say for sure it was the carpeting, but it cleared up a few days after getting home.

Hmmm. The two above explanations seem to contradict each other.

My generic mattress of decades ago didn't deform much in the two decades I slept on it.

Take a look at the hand above the blue foam in the link - The imprint shows the foam 'remembers' what was on it for a short while. The implication is that it is very conforming.

Ok, let me switch things up a bit here. I took a drive over to Palo Alto, to naturalmattressstore.com

The website is very informative and a bit entertaining to read. So, the gentleman pointed out this Clarity mattress which has springs and 3" of 97% natural latex foam, organic wool for fire protection and organic cotton cover. Hands down, nothing else close, the most comfortable mattress I have ever laid on. It was the coolest thing, like the softest mattress ever, yet supportive. The slightest movement and you could feel the responsiveness of the mattress.

Price? About $2100 for a Queen mattress only. Straight pricing, no discount. He said they work fine on an adjustable base. $2100 not that bad as Tempurpedics jump over that quickly. No returns at this store though, only comfort adjustment. They have 39 reviews for their San Rafael store on Yelp and they're just about all 5/5 stars. Pricewise, doesn't look like it will work out this time around, but I won't forget 5 minutes on that mattress. Everything else feels harder.

Don't put too much weight on the "natural" and "organic" sales spiels. Some people have serious allergic reactions to latex and they build up over time. If you have never had the slightest irritation from latex you should be OK, if you have had the slightest irritation it will most likely get worse with time if you sleep next to latex.

I have felt bad from memory foam toppers. That horrible toxic smell in the room is nauseating to me. It happened when I got a 3" memory foam topper from a local mfr. and last week, a 2" topper from Sleep Innovations (at Sears). Both since returned.

I'm not an expert on latex beds at this point. I've tried a Simmons model with 'natural' materials, a cheaper Laura Ashley model at Sears.

But, this Clarity bed was simple - an array of individual coils, 3" latex foam, wool layer and cotton cover. I have no proof how good it would be at home (too bad really), but I was blown away.

It would cost me over $1900 out of pocket for mattress alone, and that's little steep, but planning for it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from this place. I don't work there in any way and not plugging for anyone that does.

I'm on the memory foam mattress bandwagon as of yesterday. It's a Serta iComfort Revolution on box spring. Definitely priced less than Tempurpedic (I guess a TP Cloud Supreme would be comparable. Those are about $3.5k queen where iComfort Rev. is $2k ). I hope it's durable, most of all.

I was bummed to find out from a CS agent that Sears throws away any used mattresses. So, the 4 week old Strearns & Foster set is apparently heading towards a landfill. How sad given many poor people who don't have a bed. Guarantee you that bed didn't have one hint of anything like a bed bug. The ill informed store clerks told me time and again exchanged mattresses are sold in the Sears outlet stores.

So, you folks with memory foam beds ... they don't 'sleep too hot' for you?

I had to shelve the comforter and switch to a thin quilt, it only 56F at night outside, overcast, no heater in house and no A/C ... and I'm simmering on the underside. A heat trap.

I've already heard from a trusted local bed mfr. 'sleeping too hot' or warmer is a common complaint of memory foam beds.

Don't think I've heard that here.
