It would only take a couple minutes of php/mysql coding to implement a button that would allow people to click and ban a troll without waiting for a mod.

    • If the user has less than X posts, this button is visible.
    • If more than Y people who all have more than X (or maybe 2*X) posts click the troll button before they get more than X posts, they are automatically banned, signature trimmed, and an email sent to the mods for manual review
    • If deemed to be a troll, then work is done
    • If deemed to be the work of random conspiracies, then infractions given to those who clicked the troll button.

Why can't something simple like this be implemented?

I think there are a few forums that function like this.

How much coding would we need so that when you click the button the troll gets punched in the face or kicked in the nuts? :)

A "Disapprove" button (next to the "Thanks" button) would be more likely to be implemented than granting the entire community to ban someone....it might be the hint for some problematical members to stop a flamewar.

It's an interesting idea...I think I'd like it to be the sort of thing that just showed up when you hit the report button....

In other words. You click the [IMG] button and the window to report a post opens up. There would be a list of radio buttons to click "ie. "spam", "troll", "abusive language", "wrong forum", etc.

If the person being reported had less than 5 posts (or whatever) and was reported for spamming or being a troll their posting privledges would be suspended until reviewed by a moderator.

I do think it would be imperative that there be a line that said something like "malicious reporting or posts will result in an infraction" as you suggest b/c this gives a lot more power to the forum members. At the same time it sure can put an abrupt halt to spam and trolls until the mods have a chance to login and review.

Ars Technica has a spam hammer.

Subscribers get to hammer Spam. But we have no "Thanks" button.

While this was suggested for troll-baiting, I could see this being used a lot more for suspending midnight spammers until moderators perform the coup de grace.

Go over to the big GM forum. There I switched from posting to silent observation to see how they treated others. It has got to the point where saying anything negative often results in "troll" screams for banning. Needless to say, the tension is high and they are quite divided about the next steps to take.

On that daily blog for Volt, back before rollout and people actually still had hope some of the hype was true, the approach there was negative voting. People simply negative voted for those they didn't like, regardless of what they said. In fact, some didn't even bother to read the post.

The best approach is let the moderators handle the blatantly obvious troublemakers and us handle the rest by overwhelming them with real-world data contradicting their claims.

^ The algorithm for members banning trolls could get complex to avoid some of the abuses....best done with a moderator's decision.

Again, I see this as more useful for a spam intercept.

Good idea. On the whole, this works pretty well. But, there are some twisted individuals who simply don't accept reality. Facts and logic are useless against posters who don't recognise their validity. In those cases, it's best to just walk away and let them babble on to themselves.

Aye. On any typical Mac forum, suggesting Steve Jobs is anything less than a Major Deity will get you banned faster than malware being downloaded by Internet Explorer.

I know! Don't you just hate those who post anything not in lockstep with with your own POV (point of view) I can't wait for this ban button! :ban: :argue: :deadhorse: :lalala: :banplease:

Agreed, the few non-liberal posters in Fred's House of Politic or wouldn't last a heartbeat past their first non-liberal POV! Likewise in the EnviroMENTAL forum any AGW denier wouldn't last a heartbeat.

While this may be the vision I can assure you the reality would be quite different. Especially in the more controversial forums which would sadly creep into other forums. Post concerning religion or politics are a prime example. :amen:

Damn skippy. Note how we've banned every single user to the right of Noam Chomsky. Nobody EVER dares post a single post refutiating GLOBAL WARMING OMGWTFBBQ! We're all going to die NEXT WEEK!

Again, I see spammers as more of a concern than trollers as there are a lot more of them.

As far as allowing members with unpopular opinions to get banned, the safeguard is allow this member-banning only to newbies with 10 or less posts - that will cover all spammers and virtually all trollers. Member banning could not be done in Fred's House of Politics.

And moderators would have the final say on bans.

I can understand some of the frustration, but this sounds like a solution in search of a problem.

The level of trolling and spam on PC is lower than most forums. When notified the moderators do a good job of taking care of problems.

Direct anonymous democracy gets real ugly in situations like this. Lets stick with the way we are handling spam and trolls now. Having the moderators as a layer of sanity between complaint and action has served us well.

Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

Any mods like this as will all software are far easier to suggest than to code.

Add to the effort is carrying this mod to future releases of vBulletin.

For this reason alone, it very unlikely any of these suggestions would be acted on.
