For some reason my drivers side floor mat/carpet keeps kicking itself loose of the two hooks there to keep it in line. Then it moves quickly forward to stuff itself under the pedals.

The dealer indicated he had not seen this problem and didn't really have a suggestion. Has anybody here encountered it?

    Thanks

My 05 does the same thing... The dealer told me the same thing....

I think toyota needs to re-engineer their mats + hooks.

My front passenger seat mat moves a lot all the time. Fortunately, my drivers side mat stays put pretty well. The mats stayed put in my previous cars (Nissan, Honda). Honestly, Toyota, seat mat technology is not rocket science.

if you cannot secure the mat, (wire ties?) remove it so it does not create a safety issue.

Check to see if you have something under the mat. Mine never moves.

No, nothing under mats. Per the dealer they and the hooks look fine. must be my foot movement. I agree with Bisco: if I can't secure the little bugger is has to go. But I would much rather secure it than go without. I'll keep asking for a bit.

Thanks for the feedback to all.

I am not sure which floor mat you have. I have one of the al-weather mats, and it does not budge. I
You might want to try temporarily removing the mat and coating the underside with a non-skid substance, like silicone. Re-install it and see what happens.

Suggestion: Try sticking a few pieces of the loop side of velcro under the floor mat. The loops will grab the carpet and keep the mat from moving and coming off the hooks. Use the industrial strength velcro (Walmart), not the general sewing variety. Also, be sure you are pushing the mat down and onto the base of the hooks and not just loosely over the hooks.

Velcro was what I was trying to think of. Ordering some now.
    Thanks Den49!

If the velcro is not strong enough to keep them in place, you might try appropriately long zip ties. When Lexus first had the accelerator recall, they put zip ties throught the mat holes and looped them around a horizontal bar on the seat understructure. That was the interim fix until the new accelerator pedals were available.

I haven't had any issues with my mats coming off the hooks, in fact it's even hard to get them off for vacuuming, but the zip ties might be another option.

Weird, I couldn't get my factory mats to UNHOOK from the floor hooks.

Why not simply replace the factory mats with a set of Weathertech liners? They give far more protection than the factory mats, clip down easily, and their shape also helps hold them in place (I can't see ANY way they'd scrunch up under the pedals):
    WeatherTech Automotive Accessories - FloorLiner
I got just the front liners, plus a cargo area liner (I have a dog). Made in the USA.

Husky makes even more weatherproof liners, but you live in the Bay area, so you would probably be fine with the Weathertech.

Ditto the weird; it's difficult to get mine unhooked. Does the mat come free from the hooks, or do the hooks come free from the floor? Can you have another dealer check them, or post a photo? Maybe the dealer gave you the wrong ones and is playing dumb (which would be really dumb, as his liability in case of an accident would be expensive).

I agree with the two previous posts, mine is very difficult to remove and could never come loose by itself.

If it were me I would go to the dealer and compare the mat and hook set up with some of the new cars on the lot. I think something must be wrong somewhere.

If it keeps kicking up, something isn't installed right.

Like several other GenIII owners, I have extreme difficulty unhooking them for cleaning. Near all the dirt gets dumped -- inside the car -- before the mat gets unhooked.

As I said, I simply avoided the whole issue by buying aftermarket floor liners. They cover the floor much better, catch almost ALL of the grunge, are FAR easier to empty and dump the dirt, and can easily be rinsed off. Just wish I hadn't been forced to spend $200 for the OEM set when I bought the car!!!!

For winter I bought an "el cheapo" rubber floormat from Walmart, used my driver's side factory mat as a pattern and attacked it with a box cutter (including the holes for the clips). In spring I took it outside and hosed it off. I'm leaving it in because it's so easy to clean. Just like the carpeted Prius mat it doesn't move at all.

It's not that difficult to unhook the factory mats if you know a trick. Simply place one hand below the mat where the hook is, one at a time, and push the hook inward toward the eye using your other hand while lifting (toward the contour of the hook). Pretty easy to do once you get the hang of it.

My floor maps are also rock solid and never move an inch. I prefer the carpeted mats, even though they wear out quickly near where the heel contacts the mat. Yes, the Weathertech mats offer better protection and last very long. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!:)
