15,000 mile service on Gen III (2010) Prius

    To everyone upset by high costs at the dealer. READ YOUR MANUAL!!! And do what it says and nothing extra.

    1. You will be doing everything required to keep your warranty.
    2. Toyota says this is all that needs to be done.
    3. If your wife runs the show and wants to waste money because she trusts starngers more than her husband. Thats a problem you married into.

    Just read your manual.

    If you go in for the 10k service and they want to add $200 of extras. Just say No, I want to do what the manual says.

    I agree with Jburns: Per Toyota my 1st oil change was at 10,000 miles. I did that, plus their check of the car and a tire rotation every 5,000 miles. Now that I'm at 15,000 miles....I don't need a oil change.....rotate the tires. But no oil change. !!!!!!!!:nono:

    My 15,000 mile service:

    Rotate 4 tires $24.95
    Replace cabin air filter $55.05
    Repaired LR tire that was loosing air $28.95


    My cost for this was $31.27 to repair the tire......

    No oil change !!!!!!!

    Agree. I think tire rotations are too frequent. Just think about what the object is: to make the tread wear of a disposable item a bit more even. Even ONE rotation, halfway through the tire's usable tread life, would more-or-less accomplish this.

    Also, I do not go along with the fervor surrounding the 10000 mile oil change interval. 5000 miles is still the interval in Canada. How come? We're less enlightened?? What is Toyota's motivation in setting the US interval at 10000? Purely in the owner's interest? Or?

    Really: 5000 miles is a good stretch. I drained ours for it's first change at 6 months, which came in well under 5000 miles (8000 km), and both the oil and filter looked pretty knackered.

    It's 5000 miles in Canada because the interval is partially weather related. Canada has extreme winters in most places, so they made the interval 5000 miles for the whole country. People in Minot, North Dakota and other places where -10 degree winter temps are normal and places where 120 degree summer temps are not unusual would probably automatically fall under under "extreme" driving conditions and do the 5000 mile intervals there also.

    I have just booked for by 32000 km service at the dealer. It includes an extended oil service (oil change + many checks of all kinds). They charge 134$ for it, and looking at the list of things they do, it looks to me that they are overcharging a bit. Except for the oil change, the battery test and the road test, everything else is like a visual examination. They claim it takes one hour and a half to do (!). (I can hardly believe that, they must say that to justify the amount they charge).

    Reading my manual, they say: "All the basic maintenance your vehicle will need unter the terms of your new vehicle warranty is outlined in our simplified Factory-Recommended Maintenance Menu." It is not totally clear whether everything in that list is required for warranty or not. Nevertheless, I fear this service may be required for making sure warranty is not void.

    My point is I think they overcharge for that check. I was thinking of asking them to do the same checks, but instead I would pay by the hour, and not the "package" amount of 134$. I feel like this will end up being much less expensive. I always stay close to my car when they service it anyway, so I know how much time it takes them.

    What do you think? Is 1.5 hour excessive? The list of maintenance items is below:


    • Replace engine oil & filter
    • Remove & inspect engine air filter element (replace if required,additional charge)
    • Lubricate locks, latches & hinges
    • Confirm lights, horn & wipers function properly
    • Check coolant, brake, transmission & washer fluid levels
    • Perform battery service and comprehensive electrical charging system evaluation
    • Inspect valve clearance (audibly)
    • Inspect drive belts for damage, adjust tension if required
    • Check steering gear box, linkage and shock absorbers for looseness, damage or leakage
    • Inspect ball joints and dust covers, driveshaft and steering rack boots, chassis nuts & bolts for looseness or damage
    • Remove wheel and brake drum, check pad/shoe thickness. Examine brake calipers, wheel cylinders and brake lines.
    • Inspect fuel and exhaust systems for leaks or damage
    • Examine tires for damage and wear, check & adjust pressure (rotate if required, additional charge).
    • Perform road test.
