Hey there everyone. I just wanted to share with you the numbers I got on a recent trip. I traveled from North Alabama to Northeast Tennessee. A total of around ~300 miles mainly highway traffic. During this trip, however - There were some factors that would have actually made this number worse than it could have been. I was stuck in two traffic jams, each in hilly terrain. About 4-5 miles crawling at around 5-10 mph for both. Drained my battery and the engine had to kick in for a while to recharge them. Not to mention, the majority of the drive was done in heavy rain, which reduces mileage. Before you ask, here are some specs about how I drove and about my vehicle
    ----
-80 lbs. of audio equipment in the trunk.
    -ECO mode.
    -Tires at 42/40.
-A/C set at 75, switching between recirculation and fresh air (1-2 notch fan speed), overcast and cloudy sky helped with the temperature. (not auto mode).
-Two adults (300lbs total), and luggage.
-Parking lights and/or headlights were on majority of the way.
-Wipers were also used about half of the trip.
-60/70 mph the majority of the way.
    -Hubcaps off.
    -Shell gasoline.
-Used Techron fuel additive 12oz. a tank before this one (does work well, link at bottom).
-Oil change done about 200-300 miles before the trip.
-Tires were rotated about 100-200 miles before the trip.
-About 15K miles on the vehicle.
    ----
I'm not sure what else to include, I tried think of everything while I was driving to post here, but I may have forgot a couple of things. Anyways.. Just wanted to share my experience. I'm pleased with this car.
    ----
I also had the average at 58.3 for quite some time until I hit a ton of steep and hilly terrain.
    ----
Will report back on my way home in the next couple of days to see if I can pull the same numbers. Also, I was not driving like a grandpa, and was keeping up with traffic the majority of the time (I don't go 80 like some crazy people do)

Note: I realize this will be more like 55mpg calculated at the pump, however - I haven't seen these type of numbers on the prius with this type of driving before. Needless to say, I'm impressed.

EDIT: Just got back from the second trip. No rain this time, same A/C usage, etc.. Got a little better mileage.

Nice! Igot 58mpg (on the MFD) going west through the Rockies. Now I'm heading east and I'm sitting at 50mpg despite doing 2 or 3 full throttle passes (extra weight does make it harder for the Prius to accelerate to pass).

I do not believe that Techron Fuel additive is a big factor or any factor in your mpg.

With over 52,000 miles on the Prius we never added a drop of any
    fuel conditioner.

To me, I may be wrong, but fuel conditioner is a joke. Maybe
a product called Stabill, or similar is OK when placed in fuel tanks when they will be sitting for several months.

But fuel conditioner for added power and the like is, to me, snake oil.

The last tank for our Prius was over 58 mpg, calculated, no fuel additive as ever been added. Just reg. unleaded with 10% Ethanol, and mostly Costco and Safeway brand gasoline.

That's really good! The end of this trip is what killed me (when I really started to get into hilly terrain). No worries though, we're still getting better mpg than any conventional car would.
I don't believe that the fuel additive has anything to do with my mph either. I just wanted to include everything I've recently done to this vehicle along with how I drove and operated it throughout the trip so others could really compare every detail. According to the Amazon reviews, it sure seems like it may do wonders on older vehicles. However, I don't think it will do much in a Prius. I, although, do like to use a bottle of this every 10,000 miles. Using any top tier gasoline helps as well. I don't want to get into the fuel system cleaner debate. Just wanted to put that fine detail in there.

Let's see: 235.2 divided by 57.2 equals 4.1 liters per 100 km. (BTW, this works converting in either direction). 4.1 (liters per 100 km) is what we've got (at least the in-dash display) on the last couple of road trips we've done. Both were less than ideal conditions, either a fair bit of hilly/winding roads or rough weather.

Also, while you mention once that that's not calculated mileage, I think Toyota is counting on owners slipping on the rose coloured glasses and relying just on that in-dash number, which is between 5~10% inflated.

I wish I could get "ideal" conditions each time I went out on a drive. Oh well. Toyota could be doing that, but either way - the car gets great mileage and I couldn't be happier. It's not all about the mpg's for me. I love the looks, technology, low maintenance and everything else.

I found our Prius "hit a wall" at in-dash 4.1 (57 mpg) on the highway, and actually can do better in town. This is reflected in the official fuel economy numbers. Sweet spot seems to be 50~60 km (say 30~35 mph) around town, as long as traffic is light and the car is warmed up.

I'll get down to 3.9 liter per 100km (in-dash, calculated more like 4.2) (3.9 converts to around 60 mpg) under those conditions, but only if the car is fully warmed up. One big factor is the protracted electric-only stretches experienced at the lower speeds.

Anyway: since around town trips tend to be shorter, it's not that often we get into that region. ;)

Yeah and it's annoying. Our 2005 Prius' MFD FE Avg is much closer to calculated (usually within 0.10L/100km). My 2010 can be off by as much as 0.3L/100km.

The tank finished at 52.2mpg. Some of the gains were from doing 56mph through the national park and some losses from doing 75mph on the straights.

Just an update. MFD shows 60.4 mpg on the way back. Calculated at 58.4. Not bad.
On the return trip, only a small traffic jam, and no rain - sunshine whole way. A/C ran the same.

Those are pretty much the exact same highway numbers that I get. I agree that the Prius pretty much hits a wall at around 57 MPG shown on the display from highway driving. Pretty much why I said I flat out don't believe claims of 70-75 MPG highway (or at all) that some posters claim.

That's about par for me, too. I did 2 210mi trips in the past week (and still show 4 pips on the fuel gauge). About 350lbs of people and stuff, ECO mode all the way, A/C on 74deg (84-91deg and humid both trips). Speed limits varied between 45 and 65mph. (A few good downhills and some nasty uphills along the way-reversed on the way back)
    Hess fuel on last fill.

This car still impresses me (MPG-wise) after a year and about 9300mi.

70-75mpg on the highway is possible (as I found out for myself in the HSI thread) but whether that's possible for an entire highway trip, that's up for debate. Mine was a short 40km round-trip where I got 73.5mpg (3.2L/100km). The speed limit on that highway is 50mph. So it is possible, yes. Even cruising at 55mpg (90km/h) with cruise control, the iMPG gauge shows 3.0-3.5L/100km or 67-78 mpg (my bars are in 0.5L/100km increments)
