For any of you guys and gals that had a fiberglass enclosure built (or built themselves) do you know how many cubic ft the area is? I am trying to figure out how big a sub I can go. I was hoping a JL 10W6 would fit on the right side cubby hole as it looks bigger than the left side.

I saw someone put a Hertz 10" in passenger side (Shawn B) and then another person put in a 8" in a fiberglass on the drivers side.

I really want it to look FLUSH as possible.

So I guess would a 10W6 fit in the passenger cubby hole? How deep is the area? The mounting depth on the W6 is about 7". Would that fit?

    Thanks for all the help.

I get the car Thursday so now I need to really move on this.

    Thanks

Don't think you will get 7" out of the area (including the face)... probably going to have to go with a shallow-mount sub.

Hey Ryan, just stumbled across your post. I'm not sure of the exact amount of airspace in my enclosure but I know it's more than the minimum requirement of .5 cu.ft. that my Hertz 10" sub requires and it pretty beefy on the backside. I just ordered a new Kenwood NAV headunit and will be installing it here in the next few weeks. I still have some tuning issues I'd like to address with the fact that I am being over the top picky with how it sounds. I may switch subs if changing a couple other things don't work out for what I'm looking for now that I'm going to have a better source for it all. I will report back with my findings. Just FYI, my sub is 7" total depth with just under 6" mounting depth and it fits just fine.

Thanks for the update Shawn.. Problem is that the mounting depth on the 10w6 is JUST under 7". So not sure it would fit, but I am hopeful. I will have to go the 10w3 route worse case.

    Thanks
    Ryan

Goes in Monday. Got it Friday. Driving it for the weekend to see if anything is wrong before sending it in.

So far so good though.. They are going to tell me how much room I have to work with, although I think it's only going to be a JL 10W3 in there SADLY

How about the MB Quart's RLP shallow mount subs? 10" is 3" deep and requires only 0.5 cubic ft sealed. 12" works in only 0.7 cu ft sealed.

OOOOO A 12".. hrmm.. Now I have to look into it. I am always weary about those shallow mount subs as I think they just don't hit anywhere near as hard as a full sized lower end sub.

I just wonder if it would sound as good and play as loud or low as the JLW3 would.

Guess I am off to check some reviews. :)

    Thanks for the suggestions

I've heard good things about the Alpine SWR-T thin mount woofers.
You could probably do a 10 or 12 in that space.
If you're looking at the 10W6, you might also consider the Image Dynamics ID-Max 10
or the Alpine SWR-10. All should do well on 500 Watts RMS.

Thanks guys.. The problem with the 10w6 is the mounting depth. It's JUST under 7". I will look into the ID MAXX12 for sure, forgot all about that sub, although I am not sure what that mounting depth is.

The Alpine might be a good choice, although again do they even come close to the output of "Real" 10" woofers?

So far loving the Prius. :)

Unfortunately the ID MAX 12 has an even bigger mounting depth at 8.25". That just ain't gonna happen. :)

    Damn.

Im starting to wonder, if we really want bass it may need to go under the floorboard.

I am ok with that, as long as I can move it in and out when need to get to battery or tire.

But in my 5 years with my old car, I never had to, but flats do happen.

Not for me. I am keeping the storage area.. I am just doing whatever sub fits in the cubby hole on the passenger or drivers side.. Plain and Simple

I went with the right side cubby hole. It just allowed for more room (without all the curves on the drivers side).. the box just looked much better over there too.

It's being fiberglassed as we speak. Should have picks up in a few days after I get the car back from the shop.

Has anyone thought about putting one in the hatch door itself? Or would that be too difficult/impractical?

My impression was that the left side cubby was bigger, if you take advantage of the space beneath it. The little cover comes right off, and the lower box comes out with a single screw. The left side cubby may not be as wide as the right, but there's no battery in the way like there is on the right, so the air volume is greater. If you're going to the trouble of making a fibreglass enclosure, you may as well use the whole space.

Let us know how it turns out.

The wiring's more of an issue, and the hatch lid isn't all that deep, either. Plus, the plastic trim isn't really secured tightly enough for good sound - there'd be a whole 'lotta rattlin' goin' on. :)
