Three presumed dead - swept over Yosemite falls

Y'know, Amm0, three young idiots went over the edge of Vernal Falls yesterday and I have to wonder, had someone taken a video of them clinging to each other in horror as they swept into oblivion, would you put that video up here as an Oh Shoot? I wonder because, frankly, I don't see any difference at all between that video, if it existed, and nos. 145, 137 & 122, among others, which portray people in accidents so grievous they may have been either fatal or seriously crippling. Do you put these horrors up here because you think they're funny?

Shadenfreude is embedded in our genes and the discomfiture of some of your Oh Shoots are knock your socks off hilarious - but only so far as it's clear no one suffered more than the temporary sting of a stubbed toe, if they suffered any physical pain at all. But I just don't get seeing the ones that show people getting badly hurt.

Maybe I'm just assuming you'd refrain from putting up a gif of three terrified youngsters flung over the edge of a 300 foot waterfall; maybe you'd think that's just the perfect sort of gif for Oh Shoot, but I shudder if you do. But if not, WHAT in cosmic tarnation separates the stuff you DO put up from that one?

And it won't do you any good to say no one got badly hurt in all those gifs - not now. You didn't say so at the time you posted them; you didn't say anything at all; you left them to speak for themselves.

    Well?

    "three terrified youngsters"?

They were 3 idiotic adults who disregarded park warnings and warnings by everyone around them along with physical barriers. Waterfalls do not spontaneously appear, I think they knew it was there...

You kind of wonder... why? Why would you try to do a pushup on your range? Is your apartment that small?!

I'm not sure what your point is. Of course they were idiots - I said so in my first sentence. Would YOU put up a gif of them going over as an Oh Shoot moment? THAT'S my question, not were they behaving stupidly.

Why not? They were old enough and stupid enough. Don't you think some form of "oooh shoot" was going through each of them when they realized they made the ultimate goof?

I personally like the "slapstick" ones, but I don't see a need to censor them because of the severity of the stupid.

I'm finding it best to simply accept that stupid happens, without trying to understand why.

Intelligence is a continuum, and something exists at every possible point from an algae cell to an Einstein. Most of our efforts to demand individuals move up the scale will be defeated by biological limits.

OK, so we've got one vote. 2k1Toaster thinks it'd be fine entertainment to post a video of three terrified youngsters plunging to their death; entertaining because (I guess) they should have known better, and so deserved their fate and we can laugh at them.

I'm not interested in calling for some kind of censorship; I'm curious as to what line exists (if any) between what's "funny" or "entertaining" and what's just plain blood-curdling. I suspect 2k1Toaster may retract approval of posting such a video if the people involved were people he knew personally - but I could be wrong.

You with 2k1Toaster on this, Amm0? No accident so blood-curdling we can't have a good laugh at it?

It looks like she may have been getting set up for a "plank". Just before the oven door opens she changes her grip and starts to lower her body, as if she is going to lay across the counter and range.

I don't think 2k1 said it would be 'entertainment' to post the more serious videos. If I may presume, I think the point is that it's still an example of stupidity causing injury and worthy of posting as a warning of what not to do. But I tend to agree that these don't quite fit into the "Oh shoot" framework.

I think his point was they were idiotic ADULTS who were responsible for their actions and the consequences thereof. If they were 12-14 year olds, it would be an entirely different matter.

As it is, none of the clips I've seen (so far) show "blood and guts" images or close-ups of a fatality. That would be where I would draw the line.

#145 and #137 look to me like they very well could have been fatal. #122 in its final second looks like it may have crippled the woman, who collapses prone after crawling out from under.

Is that the line between posting and not posting? MAYBE it didn't hurt, or kill? MAYBE the victim was OK, so let's all have a laugh?

Quite a number of Oh Shoots involve teenagers, incidentally, probably getting seriously hurt, if not killed outright, so the line between "youth" and "adult" won't wash here.

I never said it would be entertainment, I just said I have no problem with it being posted. Just like I strongly disagree shows like jersey shore are entertainment and no matter how much I sometimes think it should be banned for making its viewers stupider, I realize I don't have to watch it if I don't want to.

Just as an FYI, never watch Tosh.0. If you can't take the clips in this thread... oh boy. For the rest who think 80%+ of this is somewhat entertaining, Tosh will rock your socks.

Ah, I forgot about planking... That is probably be best explanation and also explains why they were filming.

Agreed. If you can think for yourself (vote, drink, serve in the military) you should be able to recognize a giant metal bar by the entrance to a waterfall as a safety barrier and not just a man-made inconvenience.

Amm0, you did not even try to answer the question. It's an uncomfortable question, but trying to make me look impertinent for asking it doesn't get you off the hook, "bra".

You put these things up - do you think they're funny? Would you post a video of those "adults" plummeting over the waterfall? If not, what's the difference between that and #122, a kid leaping off a rock wall and striking it at high speed lower down before reaching (I suppose) the water below, dead, crippled, at the very least bruised and bleeding? I don't see any difference between them.
