The Lockerbie Bomber, Al Megrahi is still alive 2 years on from when he was released on 'compassionate grounds' when he was said to only have 12 weeks left to live.

Lockerbie Bomber Abdelbast Al Megrahi Appears On Libyan State Television In A Wheelchair | World News | Sky News

If it was up to me there would be no compassion given to someone convicted of his crimes. However the Scottish Government felt that a moral high ground should be taken (God knows why) and he was sent home to his family for his last days. Two years later this piece of **** is still alive and being used by Gaddafi to stick two fingers up to the west.

We all knew 2 years ago that he'd outlive 3 months. Some of the newspapers here even ran bets that he'd live at least a year - and were right.

This whole situation stinks and shouldn't be forgotten.

Agreed - how could they release him if he was not that close to death?

The entire premise for letting him go, even if he was about to die, was absolutely ridiculous. Offensively absurd. That's the point of life sentences, that you die in prison. Why you'd let a guy out under these conditions it smacked and still does of nasty backroom deals and corruption.

Glad to know the Scottish government is as much of a joke as ours.

The West has been soft on criminals for years. The only reason there was 1 prisoner in Spandau prison (until he died) was because the Russians believed "life in prison" means you die in prison.

Maybe there was an oil connection. Maybe it was bleeding-heart do-gooders. Either way it just illustrates that we are a soft target.

That man should have been a permanent exhibit in The Tower of London.

What is it about many people that heart's bleed more for murders like this than the victims that were killed? I never have and never will understand this mentality.

I'm much more concerned about Gaddafi still being in power.
I thought it had more to do with the secrets he held that the Soviets didn't want spilled to the West.

Having seen him on television, I think it's safe to say that he isn't a real danger to society right now. Of course, when the death penalty is in play compassionate release for old age, health and soon-to-die isn't an issue.

Uh, you're holding up gulags as a model for how we should run our prisons? No thanks.

I seriously doubt that the Scots letting Al Megrahi out of prison has been enticing acts of violence against the UK. Most of that lot are blowing themselves up in the process anyways these days. A life sentence is hardly going to be a deterrent against that sort of nonsense.

That said, I'm looking forward to seeing the back of Gaddafi. Can't happen soon enough.

he should have died in prison because of the lives he stole from hundreds of people. the fact that he was ever allowed to leave is nothing more than stupidity. that mofo needs to be put in front of a firing squad.

That's exactly how I see it.

    270 innocent people died - 259 on the plane and 11 on the ground. Now read the following (esp the last sentence!) from Wiki [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Am_Flight_103]Pan Am Flight 103 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] and any do-gooders who still think Al Megrahi should have been freed really need to reconsider their views;

The explosion knocked out the power, plunging the passenger cabin into darkness. A Scottish [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_Accident_Inquiry"]Fatal Accident Inquiry[/ame], which opened on 1 October 1990, heard testimony that, when the cockpit broke off, the fuselage was now an open cylinder. Tornado-force winds tore up the aisles, slamming into the chests, making it even more difficult to breathe, and stripping the clothes off the passengers. Some were thrown to the rear. Other people and objects not fixed down were blown out of the aircraft into the night at temperatures of −46 °C (−51 °F), their 31,000-foot (9,400 m) fall through the nighttime [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troposphere"]troposphere[/ame] lasting about two minutes. Some passengers remained attached to the fuselage by their seat belts, crashing to earth strapped to their seats. Although the passengers would have lost consciousness through lack of oxygen, forensic examiners believe some of them might have regained consciousness as they fell toward oxygen-rich lower altitudes. Forensic pathologist Dr. William G. Eckert, director of the Milton Helpern International Center of Forensic Sciences at [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wichita_State_University"]Wichita State University[/ame], who examined the autopsy evidence, told Scottish police he believed the flight crew, some of the flight attendants, and 147 other passengers survived the bomb blast and depressurisation of the aircraft, and may have been alive on impact. None of these passengers showed signs of injury from the explosion itself, or from the decompression and disintegration of the aircraft. Forensic tests on some of the bodies suggested that their heartbeats may have continued after the explosion. David McMullon, a helicopter pilot who was involved in the search for bodies, claimed to have found one victim who was clutching a handful of grass.

    "Sympathy for the Devil" syndrome

Because this kind of sympathy grates on my nerves, I'll ask it again:

Why - WHY are people having compassion for this bomber while having a blind eye to the 270 he killed?!

By no means is he the only criminal that people have bled over while not having concern for closure for his victims.

I totally agree that he should have remained in prison - I did my first year of college at Syracuse and had 2 fraternity brothers who were in the London program that were not on the flight and there was one girl in my freshman adviser group (there were about 15 to 20 of us in the group) who was one the plane.

I'm 100% sure this was a oil contract for a prisoner swap.

BTW, it sounds hypocritical to me that politicians who cause 100s of thousands of deaths, if not millions, are not subject to the same kind of enquiry. For eg., isn't Qaddafi equally, if not more, culpuble for this crime ? How about the Canadian government which let known bombers of Air India 182 (329 fatalities) roam around freely ? How about several high ranking US government officials and politicians who have caused untold misery and death to millions around the world ?

Its all probably Murdock's doing. :humble:

Its all a joke, from the US and England thinking they can change things in the Middle East, to all the other atrocities our countries and terrorists have committed, it never ends.
