Hah, weak!

TBH i've come to realise that diesel sucks balls, and we've basically all been tricked in europe

 

Hmmm call me a cynic but do you think importing this diesel to the US market is all about reducing Chevy's average mpg's to comply with new legislation?

Diesel engines belong in trucks, buses and maybe trains but certainly not cars.

 

Are you serious? Just because GM isn't at the forefront of diesels doesn't mean that they don't belong as a whole in cars.

Funny how different the ideologies are. While Americans dislike diesel cars, a European would think that a truck with a petrol engine is needlessly wasteful.

 

And you might have noticed that the above two anti diesel comments don't come from the USA.

Diesels are great for certain applications but emit copious amounts of s**** out their exhausts. Sure the latest versions are cleaner but at the expense of huge amounts of emission control equipment.

Diesels belong where they excel - load hauling.

Petrols, hybrids and EV's belong where people are - cities.

I was looking at emissions of the new cleaner diesels in Europe against hybrids (the Prius). To compare a latest Euro 5 compliant Mondeo diesel auto against a Prius. The Mondeo emitted something like 30 times more NOx - the stuff that makes acid rain and local air pollution in cities. When comparing the older Euro 4 diesel Mondeo against the Prius the Mondeo emitted getting on for 200 times more NOx!!!

So next time you're sitting outside at a cafe in your local city and your throat and eyes are sore as you watch a diesel cab splutter off from the lights you might want to consider the benefits of diesel

 

After years of racing a gasoline truck, I agree. A fullsize truck without a diesel engine is wasteful and much more difficult to extract more power from.

I just don't want to have too many of them running around my city because of the pollution. I can't stand driving behind one or sitting in a drive-through with them. The smell is sickening, literally! Last week I was in a drive-through burger joint and I was trapped between 2 giant diesel fuming trucks. I had to keep my windows rolled up. When I got home and took off my shirt it smelled of diesel.

While driving, the clue that reminds me to switch my HVAC from vent to recirc, is always the smell of diesel on that street, even when it is one of those so-called "Clean Diesel".

It's always unfair to compare anything against the Prius when it comes to emissions!

But the Mondeo is a great example of the recent improvements when it comes to diesels. European cities are beginning to get zones where diesels (first busses and trucks, later cars) need particle filters for emission control, and the latest clean diesels are fairly clean.

I agree that hybrids, good public transport and EVs will save the air of our cities, but to completely dismiss diesels isn't something I agree with. If we can ensure that they keep getting cleaner while penalising old non-improved vehicles (You can get aftermarket filters), then I don't see the harm.

 

That's why we like Prius. It already delivers 50 MPG and soon will exceed 75 MPG with the greatest of ease. How will traditional diesel for passenger cars compete with that?

What is farm and construction equipment doing in a drive through?! It annoys me when there are so many commercial vehicles without filters which could save at least 90% of the harmful particles (My info is old. We should have better filters by now). The latest HiLux diesel doesn't smell bad because it has an efficient not-too-big engine with a nice and efficient filter. No need to add urea (SP?) and no need to change clothes after standing next to it while idling.

 

Even modern "clean" diesels sound like clattery shitboxes, and diesel fuel is more expensive in the UK than petrol.

And it's not in all European countries that diesel is more expensive than petrol, and even when it is, the more efficient diesel engines can still break even depending on how much you use the car.

 

When the low sulfur diesel fuel became available, a dealer rep said: "Now we don't have to push them in & out of the showroom anymore". This was a common practice to keep the diesel smell from the showrooms.

 

Which now makes it a moot point. I remember when starting up a gasser would choke people in a showroom. Look how far they've come.

Believe me, you can stand behind my clean diesel and there's neither smoke nor smell. I drove VW diesels for years and when I got the new one a few years ago, my neighbors thought I stopped driving diesels.

 

I get 50mpg on the highway and in the 30's during local driving with my '09 TDI, which is better than a lot of cars here. Over in countries where diesels are more prevalent, they have had models that achieve 75mpg.

Hey, there's people that won't by a Prius, no matter what and there's people that won't buy a VW diesel. The whole point is that Chevy will be offering a car with great fuel mileage and that helps cut down consumption.

 

Yesterday there was a brand new (less than 6 months old) Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, the ecoflex model, in my work car park and it sounded like a tractor.

Earlier in the week there was a smug looking TT driver in the car park, again, very new (i think a 2010)
and the horrible sound of the straining lumbering crappy engine as it turned around was laughable.

 

The same way ICEV competes with HEV?

Sure we get diesels over here that match the fuel economy of the Prius but none are automatic transmission and none are as quick on the 0-60 mph.
