sometimes a fan automatically starts from some vent on the passenger side rear seat. It starts and goes off all by itself. Does any one know what this is and how to stop it. Very load.

The HV Battery cooling fan. On 2010's, the intake vent is on the rear passenger side near the door. One must take care not to cover this intake or the HV Battery could possibly overheat. I've never heard mine, so I'm not sure just how loud it is.

That fan cools the big HV battery. You don't want to stop it arbitrarily.

Make sure the intake is clear and the ducting is in place. (black tubes underneath rear 'parcel shelf' visible from inside trunk).

Has this phenomenon starting occuring in hot weather?

You will get a malfunction light if the battery over temps.

What year and model Prius do you have? Because you posted this in the First Generation area the Gen. 1's have an external battery vent. But what you are describing is where the intake vent is on the third Gen. as previously mentioned by GSW.

WOW, 50 million miles! that is phenomenal You probably meant 50K miles. In hot weather be sure to use the AC as it is what cools the HV Battery and you too. But the battery is more important! Possibly then, the fan will not be so "load". :cheer2:

I think M for thousand is still current in some kinds of business usage (printing shops, for example).

With the small m you might think 50 millimiles, but it would be very odd to have an overheating battery after traveling 80 meters.
