^ the nasty stuff is not on this thread, but was on plenty of past threads. On a thread this week, Steve0 mentioned the atheist-bashing was driving him - I even put his cartoon in my prior post on this thread....he along with others can't mention Christians without being derisive...if anyone at PC did that back at you there would be a flamewar.

That's my entire point - you're having it both ways. You can't see your side is doing the bashing and it's not being done at you? That observation was called "weird" - really?

And you dodged the question of where the 800-pound Bible-thumper at PC is.

I see it perfectly; but why should a secularist refrain from "bashing" an absurd dimension of human culture just because (I guess) no sectarian had "struck" first? If you see these exchanges as tit for tat you're missing the point.

There isn't one. I said so. I'm not "retaliating" against some particular person, I'm railing against the patent absurdity of bedrock religious notions, such as Christ's "sacrifice" that if looked at sensibly the elements of that fairy tale turn out not be any kind of sacrifice at all, just a few hours of inconvenience out of all the infinite trillions of years of eternity.

And, incidentally, if your problem isn't with this thread but some other one, why the blazes are you carping about it here? Go complain in the thread that actually contains the "offense".

On the contrary, I am immensely pleased with the evolution of understanding achieved in this thread.

If someone responded in kind with the same intensity some of you did, i.e. "the 800-pound Bible-thumping gorilla", I would fully expect many of you to be very unhappy - oblivious that you are doing the same thing.

It definitely seems the the vocal secular members are just a lot more defensive than the other side.

For hundreds of years, including now, religious people attack, and yes that is the right word, attack people who don't believe, or believe differently, yet they should not speak out about the reality that there is no proof or that the story doesn't make sense?

    Hyo Silver,

I'm not telling anyone to go to Hell, nor is that exactly in line with my beliefs. ;)

I'd truly be defensive if I brought this topic at a number of other sites, where nobody is ranting on this topic...at PC some of the secular members have been OCD even to this day. At times, I have been active counter-replying, but not EVERY DAY....plenty of times I've been quiet.

No, I understand it wasn't you. My point was that the 'bashing' goes both ways. Any perception that one side is more vocal or sensitive than the other is just that - perception.

^ thank you for your understanding.

Many times, less being said is more effective - rambling and arguing are counterproductive.

Think that's all I have to say for awhile.

    Concur!!

Jesus said to go forth and spread the good news. If some folks aren't picking up what he's putting down, that's not my lookout.
It's obvious that they got the memo, or they'd be saying "Jesus???...whozat??"
For me...that's when the "Judge not lest ye be judged" instruction becomes immediately operative. Judging others is above my paygrade and outside my AOR...at least theologically speaking.

That would be almost all religious threads.

Yeah...I know, and she tried to slip any inference to God, Jesus, or any of the disciples, she'd be on the street before that class ended.

It's kinda funny if you think about it. I've visited countries where proselytizing is illegal...like, get you beat up or locked up illegal.
The United States isn't quite that bad yet, but we're trending in that direction. Pretty soon the _________ (insert activist group here) will demand that people be fired for saying "God Bless You!" when somebody sneezes.

However (comma!) since your wife is a teacher, she has to be sensitive to the fact that not all of her students are going to come from families that want their little bunchkins exposed to religion...or even just Christianity.
Our Public Education System has quite enough on it's plate already! ;)

    Thank her for me.

It has all been foretold. It will get much worse than you mentioned too.

If by "worse" you mean tolerance for religion will decline, yes, of course it will get worse. Most of what contitutes religion cannot survive advancing knowledge.

The free practice of religion will become increasingly suppressed, for the very basic reason that practice affects other people. No advanced society today tolerates a parent withholding medical care from their children because their religion forbids it. No civilized society tolerates discrimination on the basis of religious metrics (this country still does because it isn't civilized, but it's getting there).

But the suppression will (mostly) be non-violent; it will occur through civil application of law; laws that will relentlessly shrink the venues of religious practice just as steadily and surely as the venues for smoking tobacco are being shrunk, ultimately to nothing.

I doubt very much we'll see a rise in violent opposition to religion, i.e. religion itself by the irreligious. What we will see (and see now) will be violent opposition against particular religious sects BY OTHER SECTS, e.g. attacks against muslims by christians, and acts of violence by religious sects against the irreligious, e.g. muslim reaction to the Mohammed cartoons.

But as the tide of knowledge inexorably infuses human culture, religion will die away, as unecessary to human affairs as Zeus.

The attack on religion really doesn't exist, just like the people that complain about keeping Christ in Christmas, when did it go away? Christians can celebrate Christmas all they want, put up crosses, trees, decorate, Merry Christmas people, nothing stopping them, where it comes into play, is their demand that it be everywhere THEY want it to be, on government property, which belongs to all, at workplaces, which belong to employers, and on and on. Yet the point being, Christ is not being taken out of Christmas, its just a good unfounded talking point for them to complain about.

Sometimes truth and reality are scary, but it usually proves to not be when all eyes are open.
