    Let's start with a picture:

Hey guys! The one thing I hated most about the Prius when I purchased it was the taillights. I do not know why, but it reminds me of circa 2000 when clear taillights were the cool mod for honda civics.. (I had them on my hatchback and got pulled over many times for them)

So, I asked an internet vinyl shop if they had a kit for the 2010-2011 Prius. I had used him before for my TL for a black vinyl roof overlay, which came out fantastic. He did not have one, but said he would make one! WOOT! I waited about 2 weeks for him to get one sized out for exactly what I wanted. (He was having some issues getting a test fit car in his area.) I saw there were other retailers that had taillight overlays, but they did not have the configuration i wanted. I wanted Red with Smoked reverse and Smoked turn signals. I wanted it to look factory! This guy can pretty much make any custom vinyl you wanted. I opted these instead of the JDM taillights because I wanted my taillights to look exactly how they are now. (But I am not sure if I will change my mind if I see the JDM ones in person).

I had a local tint shop do the install, since I am not the best at laying pieces of vinyl over curved areas. The vinyl that was sent to me was a little larger then the taillight to give room to tuck. The tint installer said it made it easy not to mess up and to ensure that the whole taillight was covered. Then from the advice of some other priuschat members (32kcolors,HI MPG) I had my 3rd brake light tinted really dark. It gives the illusion that there is no 3rd brake light when the light is off.

    On to the pics!

Here is a pic of the taillights with the hatch open. The tint shop did a very good job wrapping around those corners! Much better then I could've done!

Here is a pic my wife took of the brake lights on. It has not diminished my taillights in any way. I will tkae a night picture when I get the chance.

And now a side shot to show how factory they look!!

If you want to get some custom taillight overlays you can reach this guy at:
Email: [email protected] (Tell him RJ with the Blue Prius sent you!)
    His website:
    www.bluebatmobile.net

He doesn't have a store, so you pay him via paypal and communicate via email. He is on MANY car forums selling vinyl. Just do a google search for Bluebatmobile.

(I posted this mod on my progress thread, but I wanted it to get more exposure so more people could know about this new available mod, so I decided to make a new thread on it)

Post pics if you get them!! I want to see what configurations others come up with!!

Your car looks great. I've been thinking about doing a similar mod on the factory fog lights, yellow film tint on the fog light only. I haven't found any pre-cut over lays for the Prius......maybe batmobile can help me.

Cool. I think red is the way to go on blue. You got pulled over for sporting clear tails? What exactly did they lack that made them illegal? No rear reflectors?

This is what bino's tails looked like wrapped in red vinyl before he got the JDM Crystal Eyes.

RJ - Your Prius looks very sharp man! The overlays look very clean. I am in complete agreement about the clear lens look of the OEM taillights.

Yes he most definitely can! Post pics in this thread if you get them!!

Yah, because there was no rear red reflector on my car. This was also back in 2001 when no cars really had the clear taillights like they do now (For Example: Lexus Rx and Hs) Here is a pic of my taillights for my old 2000 Civic Hatch:
The one on the left is the same clear taillight as the right, butI just opened it and painted it red inside for a custom look. The middle is OEM taillight. The one on the right is the clear taillight. I was trying to be different back then with my taillights also! lol You can see at the bottom of the pic some red reflective tape I found that I was trying to put somewhere, so I would not get pulled over anymore.

OK, bottom line... what was the cost? I can't see the photos at work but from your avatar I like the look of the tails.

Cost for me for the red AND the smoke was a little less then 50.00. I then paid a tint shop 40.00 to install.. and then another 10.00 to the tint shop to tint my 3rd brake light with their own material. So, total for me was 100.00 for everything. If you have faith to do it yourself it will be less then 50.00 depending on what configuration you want. But, I would contact bluebatmobile to get the exact price. My price may differ because I live on the east coast and he lives on the west coast.. Post pics in this thread if you get them!!

Ouch! The all clear tails look very illegal LOL! They could have relocated the rear reflectors to the bottom and still look decent and be safe from the cops.

Thanks. What would I tell him for the configuration you got (taillights)?

I will try just about anything once. :)

Those overlays look great! It's funny...when we have clear lenses, we want colored lenses. When we have colored lenses we want clear. We always want what we don't have! :)

Yep, the grass is greener on the other side. I'd be sporting the clear Valenti tails if the Prius came stock with red ones :)

Thanks for the info. I emailed the guy and am awaiting his response. I really want those overlays. Had the windows tinted yesterday. Only 35%. Just enough to help the A/C out. That's all I want out of the tint and that's the legal limit in North Carolina (I live in South Carolina but do travel through NC once in a while).

Nice, now that I am home I can see the photos. So the question is, how does the tint impact the turn and reverse lights?
