Toyota recently published a service bulletin to address rear brake noise. I know I have seen a few complaints of this here. As usual, free replacement is 3yr/36K warranty. Chances are, if you already have more than 36,000 miles, you'd need pads, shims, and mounting brackets. Somewhat costly, but might be covered if you had lodged a complaint with your dealer while still within the warranty period. I'd be interested to know if this is covered under an extended warranty.

    See attached for the text.

I know 98% of my posts are in the Gen II area, but I do occasionally drop in here and in FHOP...

Nice. Now all that's needed is a TSB for the clanging calipers on the front end and we won't have to fight for fixes of the most glaring mechanical defects on the Prius.

I've heard a bit, off-and-on. Can actually hear it real good by jacking up the back and turning the wheels by hand. Still it's very intermittent, just at certain wheel rpm, maybe more so in reverse and with the car cold. So far I've just ignored it, don't think it's in any way detrimental. I"m always worried the fix might mess something else up, and/or not be effective.

I had my brakes worked over in early 2010 (bought car in August 2009) for brake squeal issues when cold. The pads were de-glazed, among other things. Now, I have a brief squeak in the morning when I back out of my driveway, but it doesn't keep making noise as I drive away from home. It's annoying that my neighbors hear my new Prius squeak, but not enough to take the time to go have the TSB implemented. I'll keep this TSB in mind for the next time I have to visit the dealership service dept.

I have this problem EVERY TIME I leave work in the afternoon. About to go in for it's first service (5K), so this is getting put down along with the fact that my steering wheel has been off-center since day one.

Same problem here, but I can only reproduce it when it is cold and damp outside in the morning. Unfortunately it is also quite loud. It's going to be a hassle to reproduce this for the dealer.

Thread bump...I've got this same problem with my Prius and wondering if anyone has any instructions on taking out the pads? It is just one bolt and the calipers swing upwards to access the pads?

They're 14mm bolts, torque spec is 25 ft-lbs. Be sure that the pad protrusions are completely CENTERED in the grooves on the piston as the slightest deviation from this will cause dragging. I cannot stress how critical this is...

Thanks. Is there an equivalent Technical Service Bulletin for Toyota UK please? My 2009 Gen III has started squealing each commute, and is days away from the end of its 3 year warranty.

    Regards,
    John

Apologies for the delay in following up, but have some great news! My Toyota dealer (in Suffolk) when given a copy of the US TSB, went away and found there has been a similar TSB in the UK. They replaced the rear disks and pads (not sure if any calliper parts were changed) free of charge!

Worth raising with your dealer if car is still under warranty.

    Regards,
    John

In the Netherlands there is a fix for this problem. The rear disk break mounts are replaced. The part nummers are:
47822-47090 Mounting RR Disc Br Left
47821-47090 Mounting RR Disc Br Right
