    Hi all, first post here.

Just bought a Prius last night. 2008 model (Australia).

Will a 1-din dvd unit, like this one, fit into a Prius? I`m assuming it would be ok, as there's an in-dash tray which could be taken out.

(oops, seems I can't post links as yet... well, have a look at the 1-Din units at chinavasion ... I was thinking of the King Viper Lite).
If that's ok, then I would also get these, and connect the in-dash dvd to them:

(deleted link to 9-inch Headrest DVD Player from the same site).

Just want to make sure it's ok, and there are no issues with anything, before I order them.

    cheers,

106 views and not one reply.

Anyone got any information on this, before I buy the gear?

Or even any alternatives.... flip-down roof monitor perhaps? Replace the Prius cd-unit with a 2-din 7" touch-screen dvd unit?

Any info would be helpful, as I don't know what is possible or not with the standard Prius screen.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking.

Yes you can install the DVD player in the tray located just below your oem stereo. Click on the kenwood link in my signature for more information.

To play a dvd source through the oem MFD screen your will need a module like the lockpick sold by coastal electronics.

    Thanks for the feedback F8L.

    I have three options:
    - 1-din dvd/motorised screen (stealth slot)..... but would the screen have enough room to deploy?

    - 1-din dvd with no screen, and video appears on the MFD. The series 3 Lockpick is $229..... nearly as much as the dvd player :)

    - double-din dvd/touch-screen, and replace the oem stereo. It wouldn't be as wide, so I'm wondering if there were kits to make it all look better on the sides. Also, teh 68-omh resistor is needed apparently, so the Prius still thinks the oem stereo is attached. Is that right?

    cheers.

I believe the flip out will fit. I'll look for the thread were some did the install. I cannot do it till later though.

I cannot find the thread with the install of a flip-out DVD player. If your unit doesn't have an amplifier in it like a normal stereo then you can use a LockPick 3 to give you an aux input and a video input for the MFD screen. This is obviously not needed if you go with a flip-out DVD unit.

Thanks for looking. I think I know which one you were looking for, as you mentioned the author in a couple of other threads. I'll try and message him if I can, to see how he made sure the flipout fitted properly, while still being stealth (may not be possible I think to stay stealth).

All the units have their own amps. I wonder how much power a head unit with monitor, and 2 head-rest monitors take from the Prius battery.

I'm pretty sure the flip out unit will fit. Worst case scenario is you remove the smoke cover if it's doesn't but i've seen a flip out unit in there before.

Since your desired units have their owns power you can't simply install them like I did in my stealth thread. Just remember to ground the parking brake wire on the dvd player so it's can be used at any time. Just be safe. I almost crashed once because I was watching a movie during a scene with a really hot girl in it. lol

Really? Cool. I was really worried the motorised screen wouldn't be able to deploy properly, as the stereo unit above is like a cliffhanger. The other problem I thought of, is whether it would be too low to be a comfortable viewing position (have your passengers head tilted down all the time to see the screen).

Heheh :) Cheers for the brake wire tip. The driver wouldn't be looking, except at red lights maybe. We have 3 kids in the car so won't be reckless.

So that you know there are other options, you can get a 2-DIN unit and replace the stock radio.

I've been looking for your guide since F8L mentioned it :) Thank-you!

I'm used to a 2-din unit in our Delica (with a 19" monitor in the back which I don't think I can get away with in the Prius (or can I, on a smaller scale? Anyone else ever tried to fit a roof-top monitor in a Prius?):

So where do you find the fill-in bits to the left/right for a 2-din unit?

Is there a way to use the volume/station controls on the steering wheel with a new unit?

You have to put a 68-ohm resistor in, correct?

Any other tips on the installation of the unit?

    cheers!

I bought the stuffs from either Amazon or ebay. There is a PDF document attached in that thread to answer all of your questions.

Basically, you'll need SWI-JACK (or similar) to interface the steering buttons to the new head unit.

    Cheers,

I'm also checking into computer options as well, but one person mentioned that the Prius battery isn't very good, and would need to be replaced to handle a 'carputer'.

    Carputer for Prius

I'd like to ask the Prius experts:

    - with a normal 2-din dvd unit (with 7" screen), and two headrest monitors.... do you need to replace the 12v battery with a beefier one?

    - Is it possible (and worthwhile) to install an extra battery (keeping the original), and somehow have them both be connected to the car recharging (so there would be plenty of power, and the aux 12v battery would also be recharged)?

    - Does having a carputer really need a battery replacement?

The Prius battery is rated at a low CCA but it will work fine as long as you keep the car running when you use your electronics. You won't waste much fuel and your battery will stay charged. With the car off you will drain the battery quickly.

    So that's for installing a 2-din 7" touch-screen and 2 9" headrest monitors.

Any idea if a carputer would need a battery replacement (the yellow-top Optima was the one recommended)? I would have thought a carputer using 10amps or less, wouldn't be too power hungry. I have no knowledge of electrickery though.

Any standard 2-DIN will fit. You just need to get a face plate because Prius radio face is wider than normal.

I bought the Scosch panels to marry with the unit (from your guide iirc). Hopefully they look ok.
