I want your opinion on Shark Fin Soup...RIGHT NOW!

Working in a chinese restaurant for a long time and growing close to many chinese families (always celebrate new years) I know that if it is a traditional eat, it can be bought and eaten. Doesn't matter if it is legal.

I am not a fan of shark fin soup or any soup in general but I have heard good things about it. Yes it is bad for sharks and yes these sharks are being over-fished. If you care, then don't eat it.

 

Just keep your fingers out of the soup. Shark's revenge.

 

Personally, I'd rather eat a nice bowl of chicken noodle.
Sailors and sharks have had a rocky relationship over the years, and so I find it hard to wipe back a tear when I hear that they're being overfished, but they are an important species, so I suppose I should be somewhat concerned.....or at least pretend to be.
I made a deal with sharks a long time ago that if they didn't bother me, I'd try to do likewise....my 2-3 lifetime samples of shark fin soup notwithstanding.
Chickens are hardly endangered, so I can eat them guilt free, as long as nobody fries them, which is another matter.
So.....ban or eat.
I can't really say I care all that much.

 

ehh,maybe give those in favor of the ban some Shark Fin soup and convert them.

 

The poachers ought to be shot for their illegal hunting, but shark fin sales shouldn't be banned.

Keep eating it and then when there are no sharks left due to over fishing, too bad.

There have been similar arguments for and against all sorts of similar things in the past. Either you protect the species, restrict fishing or wipe it out to extinction.

Yes, and after the fin is cut off, the shark is thrown back alive to die a painful death because it cannot swim properly.

I don't eat any seafood as our oceans are endangered from over fishing across the board. It isn't even just the species being fished - it is the collateral damage to the undersea landscape by drag nets, the destruction of other species caught along with the targeted fish, the imbalance of the food chain from one species being fished to near-extinction/extinction...

On a global level, the destruction of such a huge percentage of our planet is insane. I won't be a part of it.

 

Meh, I've had shark fin soup a couple times - it's not that special. It's like so much other Chinese food, salty as hell (the dominant flavor it SALT) and the shark fin barely tastes like anything. If they ban it, great.

 

Per your saying,you have never eat real good Chinese dishes. What you ate was not geninue dishes. Real Chinese dish is light,yummy,good smell, fresh(Cantonese style). Please don't jump to conclusion if you have not tried the real one.

 

I have nothing against it in principle, wasteful and excessive fishing practice is the problem rather than the dish.

However, there are many fish eaten in the USA that are not fished in a sustainable manner. Banning one and leaving the mass-consumed ones seems a bit lipstick. But, if the species of shark (partially) eaten are endangered now then, sure, ban it.

As RV noted, the lack of sustainability in fishing is a problem. Basically, to have sustainable fish for food, you want to eat farmed small fish instead of the large, meaty fish at the top of the food chain. (Well, you can have some fished fish, but it can't be done on a really large scale).

 

Not necessarily so. While fish can be farmed sustainably, current practices threaten the viability of remaining stocks of wild fish.

 

I am not crazy about it. I actually prefer the artificial shark fin. It is the soup that has taste. The fin is just a bit rubbery/gummy.

 

If you really need to eat some overpriced soup to remain in touch with your heritage, just switch to bird spit, I mean nest soup.

 

I've yet to see an oyster grown in the rocky mountains but have seen the end product served
