Newbie question about front speakers

There is a much bigger selection of round speakers to choose from.

I don't remember how much depth is available in the doors, possibly a good 6x9 is too deep to fit??

There is frequently someone opening their door panels in the forum, maybe they will measure the depth for you. That reinforcement bar in the 11th picture from the top looks like the depth limiter.

Likely because that is what comes with most component sets. With Crutchfield you will notice most 6x9's or coax or triax. My "guess" is that 6x9s are cheaters to get lower bass cheaper, but at the cost of quality. A round speaker is better. The base Prius speakers are junk and thier JBLs are not much better.

 

Frodoz beat me to it. The stock 6x9 speakers are complete crap compared to 2 for $50 6.5 diameter speakers. The stock ones have weak muddy bass.

I did a qualitative comparison here during my step by step door speaker upgrade. It's not scientific but the differences were obvious.

I didn't do an A-B comparison with and without the ring. It seemd like a case it might help and couldn't hurt. The pictures don't make it obvious but the ring was bridging a relatively small gap, under an inch and the aluminum was bonded to the speaker adapters with RTV and had a ring of rubber weatherstrip to seal it to the door card. So no thin aluminum resonance problems

I don't remember trimming the door card. The stock speaker had been sealed to the door card with some thin foam rubber so the inside surface of the door card was relatively flat. If I did trim it it was just some trivial plastic flashing or rib.

 

And suggestions to replace my JBL set?

 

IIRC, the JBL door speakers are a different impedance and not very good speakers.

If you do use 6x9 speakers be aware that the non-JBL Prius speakers have a considerable stand off built in to them so you would need a thick adapter to mount them at the same distance from the door as the originals

 

I fing the JBL speakers in my Prius to be perfectly adequate. I often turn the bass down because it is too hoonish. But I do enjoy In a Gadda da Vida at full abss occasionally. It seems to me US Prius are less well accessoried than Aussie Prius??
