Buying used 2010 Prius 3

You know they paid 24k for it??? BUT you want to buy it from them for 900 more? AFTER they put 5,000 miles on it?

Maybe I am just confused but why on earth would that be a good deal?

Grab a new prius for around the same price..

I was looking at my dealer's inventory the other day and they had a 2011 3 with Nav for $28,000. Unless $3,000 would stop you I think I would go with the 2011.

Just for comparison purposes, I paid $26,200 for my 2010 3 with Nav in 2009. There have been a couple of price increases since then.

 

Brand new III with Nav is 25,400 from Dianne in LA- just to give you an idea. I was also looking to buy a used III rather than a new II - but decided the new II ($23,000) made more sense and then simply add a Rosen for less than $1,000 more and have a new car with better system

I would suggest one thing, looking at this as two transactions, the sale and the purchase.

The sale is done and over with, the purchase is the question (obviously, I'm just stating...). When you're purchasing, you're getting a higher interest rate no matter if you buy your old one or a new one, the 1500-2000 is lost no matter what. So let's forget about it and toss it out of the discussion..

The taxes you're going to have to pay on any vehicle, so let's just put that aside for now.

So, the question is, what do you want and what are your options? Did you LOVE that vehicle and have great memories in it or something, so much that you want THAT specific vehicle back vs an identical one? I'm guessing with 5k miles probably not, but it's not out of the question. What's the market like for new and used vehicles where you live? Is it realistic in your area to buy, like MikeR5 says, a 2011 III for 25,400? Is the certified 100k mile warranty something you place value in? What are your chances of your plans changing and leaving the country again? Do you even want a new Prius or is it choice old Prius or something new? Is it just uncomfortable for you to buy a new Prius because you just sold a perfectly good one? Do you absolutely have to have a vehicle soon?

Ok, those were a lot of questions but I think we need more info to help you out.

IMO:

If you really love that specific car, just buy it.

If you can get a new one, for 500 + the difference in tax more, you should buy new. I would think less mileage + 1 year newer, you'd get that back when you sell and then some.

If you have to pay MSRP then it gets more hazy, you're saving, what 3000 plus the tax difference, still not a whole lot of savings of sticker but it is a Prius... demand is high, can you hold off until demand goes down a bit?
