^ Just saying the past couple of days the same tired venting has happened again, and it's no different than threads that get moved to Fred's House of Politics except the firebombing is on the religion topic - content proven time and again to provoke heated replies, upsetting everybody, resolving nothing.

Me thinks idiot doesn't know what athiesm is: I directly provide a scource as to why Hitler was not an ahtiest, and rock thrower goes on to Obama and a topic far from athiesm. Is he that transparent over how much of a blowhard he is? So far, it's a resounding yes.

Don't let one person ruin it for you. There are plenty of good reasons to stay. Forget the BS, have a look around the many other forums, and see if you can find something of interest. :)

The thread topic, in case you cannot read, is "Goodbye Religion." I was saying goodbye and good riddance to religion. But then, I would not expect anybody who believes in religion to be capable of understanding much of anything.

Ignorance is believing in fairy tales, like an old man in the sky who will reward the people you like and punish those you do not like.

I remember watching a Pentacostalist and a Catholic having a fist fight over the question of whether salvation comes through faith or good works. Christians are their own worst enemies. During the Roman persecutions, more Christians were killed by other Christians over minor points of dogma than were killed by the Romans! Eventually the Pauline Trinitarians killed off all the others. If Christians actually believed ANYTHING that Jesus taught, the world would be a far better place today. George Bernard Shaw said that the only thing wrong with Christianity is that nobody's ever tried it. Back when the Church had real political power the first people burned at the stake were Christians who did not toe the Church line on all the minor points of dogma.

I think it's telling that one of our most vociferous and irrational Christians takes his screen name from a medieval weapon of war. I fantasize about closing churches or making them pay their fair share of taxes. We apparently have Christians here whose fantasy is killing the "enemies" of christ, if we can judge by a certain person's screen name.

Insurance, banking, and politics are full of criminal and anti-social activity, but at least they serve some purpose when they're more or less following the rules. Religion serves no purpose whatsoever, except to feed parasitic priests, rabbis, ministers, and mullahs, who foment intolerance, hatred, and wars.

(Oh, and I'll be off line for a while. I'm not leaving PC. Just going on vacation. One advantage of being retired is being able to take lots of vacations, and I usually go places that don't have internet access.)

Funny, how the terms 'wilderness' and 'civilisation' seem to have been transposed. Please take pictures. No, I mean bring some back.

Some secular members either silently or vocally (as might be the case here) leave over threads like this one, but may I suggest the same applies to members of faith? It's just like out of control political threads - some members both left and right are just sick of it.

That is one thing that I think almost everybody agrees on. Unfortunately, I have to use the word "almost".

It's funny that you should cast the accusation of "ignorance" at Christian's and then turn around and make the statement that "Religion serves no purpose" are you ignorant of the hospitals, schools and aid that Christian Churches give to the poor? If you can't say the same about atheist then it's atheism that serves no purpose.

Think of various hot spots around the world....Middle East, in the recent past Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland. Almost everybody would agree to stop fighting, and someone would kill and the conflict resumes again. This topic has those same elements of die-hards.

Perplexing is for years all sides on this have fought on this topic with no good outcome, yet this will go on and on and on... I could ask the question to specific members why keep this years-long flamewar going, but I'm convinced there can't be a good answer.

An even better point: Every single person on this planet believes war is bad, or at least will say they do. But why, after thousands of years of this belief, do we have them more than ever nowadays?

(That's actually a rhetorical question, but if anyone has any ideas I'd like to hear)

^ I'd say a lot of it is to get the last word or last blow, which goes into a vicious cycle.

Internet forums are one thing, but hot spots with bloodshed, the feeling go thru several levels:

    - Hatsfield family enraged because a McCoy killed one of them.
    - A McCoy gets killed and they want to rub out another Hatsfield or two
    {repeat ad nauseum}

As bad as 9/11 was, the US still does not live in a part of the world terrorism is not a daily event - imagine what that is like.

There are two states of "Peace". One is freedom and the other is totally successful oppression. Question: If the dissenters in Syria are completely silenced, does that mean a lack of dissent is the desired state?

I am. Can you please give me an example of a church which earns money, and gives it to the poor? The only thing I see are churches being given money by their parishioners, spending most of that money on buildings, regalia, priests, and pass an miniscule percentage on to the poor. I would love a single counterexample.

    Two words: Bill Gates.

To all those who bemoan yet another religion thread, nobody is forcing you to read or reply to it. The thread title is clear enough, and if it wasn't, one peek would tell you it's a religion thread. When I get tired of a thread I stop reading it. If the topic does not interest me, I don't open it. It's rather silly when someone reads a 5-page thread and then complains about the topic.

I'm off on my vacation soon. See you all when I get back.

I'll hope religion has vanished from the world by then, but I won't hold my breath. ... Well, actually, I will be holding my breath a little bit, since I'll be snorkeling with a bit of freediving. This morning I'm back up to a 3 1/2 minute static breath hold time, which they tell me should translate to a 1 1/2 minute dive time. That would surprise me, but we'll see. A 1 1/2 minute dive time would translate to having one minute to cruise around at 15 meters, and would be very cool.

Okay, you can go back to arguing about religion now.

Whatever makes one happy, just be cool about it and don't force one's beliefs on another.

    Sounds reasonable to me.
