Land Rover to Offer Diesels in U.S.

I liked my diesels...

 

In 2006 (or 2007) we dumped our range rover just prior to the warranty expiration. Lost track of the times we had to take it into the shop for 'warranty work'. Last instance was a yellow light stating, "service required" ... no symptoms. Short story, a new tranny/transfer case. Talk about dodging a bullet. (In its place, we got the hybrid SUV Lexus, and never looked back.) Oh! did i forget to mention it got a whopping 13mpg? The day they deliver the Range Rover in diesel to the U.S. will be the day NO effect happens to their CARB rating. Why? At over 6,000 they're exempt. Too bad. Those kinds of loopholes were deliberately designed to prevent the demise of the land barge. Isn't that lovely? Anyway, I understand CARB has a special rating for diesel. Something like a multiple of .15 is added to its fuel economy, because diesel fuel has more btu's ... and is thus expected to get higher mileage.

 

The brute force from the diesel V8 Range Rover is quite amazing. I'm not generally a fan of diesels but their place is in SUV's as you get power and good mpg's (comparatively).

 

Grew up watching nature programs. So I have a fondness for the rugged, jeep inspired ones. I was thinking bringing back, or first time, a small inline diesel would have been sweet.

 

why can't the brits get with the program and start downsizing their vehicles. don't they have a clue as to the effect on climate change these huge vehicles have? don't we have enough problems of our own without importing theirs too?

They don't sell here anymore as nobody can afford to run them so we're flogging a job lot over the Atlantic to our friends who grumble about $4 a gallon.

 

Land Rover is not even British - Ford owned it for a while and sold it to Tata (the Indian company that makes the Nano). There is definitely a place for these trucks - places where rugged and comfortable are needed - it is just not with American soccer moms.
