I have no idea about what products are out now, but basically I want a wireless security camera that has night vision and will take pictures only upon sensing movement.

In terms of what to transmit the images to ideally they'd be sent to my laptop, which is on wi-fi. I envision the images all making it to a folder I already have set to backup instantly with Carbonite. In this manner I could actually suffer a break-in and have my gear stolen and yet probably the images would be online.

Is there anything relatively inexpensive that would do this kind of thing? I don't need video and I don't really need some advanced base station or internal monitors. I live in safe 'hood, but just want this for "fun" :) I have a good spot for it under my porch, overseeing the driveway and street. Also let me know which kids to scream at if my car gets dented!

Something to consider... If you have a wireless cam you still have to run a wire to it to provide power. Why not save a little on the cam and just buy wired cams.

Foscam is a good IP camera. I bought a bunch of Foscam clones for cheap for my security camera setup for the house. The ones I found to be really good were branded DB-Power and I was getting them from a dealer for about $75 each. Night vision is almost useless because of the long shutter speed but at least you can see kind of whats going on.

I use Zoneminder to do the motion capture recording so I dont know if the cameras would do what you need without software.

Too much hassle with the wiring, though I did want to plant this near a socket for power. But remember I need to get this idea past my wife, so running wires into the house would be a no-no at this stage :D

Found a nice camera to at least show me the concept is sound if not already built into a product (or several!).
http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B002JLZMN8?tag=priuschatcom-20 one has its own website built in, so can be remotely accessed anywhere else. Now I need to see if there is software that exists to replicate its images to a folder on another computer (even if a service on that other one just regularly polls this for updated images), so that the new images could be placed into a folder set for online backup.

I do need an all-in-one type camera since I don't want to set up a CCTV base unit.

TheForce's recommendation on foscam shows me some that also work in similar ways, e.g.http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B0046710G6?tag=priuschatcom-20

Remember if your pointing the Foscam out a window you will need to turn off the IR LEDs or the picture will be washed out.

Great video of the camera flying away!!! With a plug in electric, the video would be shorter but the results the same... One less camera.

The wireless range may be 1,000 to 1,500 feet but the power cord for the monitor is about 10 feet, maybe?

Yeah, if there was a microphone in the camera we could be entertained with a very indignant squawk when it reached the end! :pound:

Everything in my house is X-10 automated. All the lights. I can turn any light on/off with a remote anywhere. I also have the main water in my house supply line X10 controlled so when I leave it shuts off the water main to the house to prevent broken water pipe flooding which is a real problem down here in old houses.
My wife's boss had a water line break in her house a few months back and it gushed all day. Caused around $40,000 worth of damage.

X10 makes make great wireless camera's and security devices.

I also have a Simon home security system which interfaces to all the house lights too.

    Huge x10 action on eBay.

My issue with X10 is they seem kind of entry and I've read of a LOT of problems with people successfully setting them up.

BTW, I continue my search. At this time I'm narrowed down to a vivotek camera, they are a few hundred bucks, megapixel quality, wired. I want something really quite reliable.

Another option is a trail camera, the kind used for detecting wild game

    Cabela's: Search Results

Friend of mine has a vacation property and couldn't figure out who was stealing his gas and propane tanks. He set up the trail camera, and discovered is was a neighbour about a mile away

So what did he do? He paid a visit with the printouts, then beat the crap out of the guy. Never had anything else go missing

Teenagers rifling through the neighbours car. Amazing how few remember to lock their cars at night

People carefully trying the front door to see if it is unlocked

Doing drugs in the middle of the street

A fairly serious knock down fight in the middle of the street

    Etc

One has to be careful here to what extent to get involved. Very few victim rights in Canada. A lot of Americans are raised to believe they can defend themselves using any means necessary. Here in Canada, you try that and YOU get arrested and thrown in jail

Hence the vigilante justice often seen here. People are afraid to call the cops as criminals are likely to retaliate. So a lot of s*** happens under wraps

I've tried x-10 and I just cant stand it. Too much noise on the power line which causes random things to happen. Trying to filter it out is also a pain. I had some of their night watch cameras which say they work in low light but they dont really. They are only good for 320x240 resolution which is only good for indoor shots. I really need to get rid of all my x-10 stuff. I have a whole box full of everything.

I find that for home use 640x480 is great for the price. I'm using 12 cheap Chinese Foscam knock offs that I got for about $75 a piece. In the mail now is 3 PTZ cameras with IR night vision. They are 640x480 and have a 3x real zoom. I was able to get those for less than $200. They are also Chinese Foscam knock offs.

For home automation I've been testing Insteon devices. They seem to work great except they are expensive. I'm trying to find something to make my house more Star Trek like but unable find anything decent.
