Is it too early to start this thread? I don't know ... but in our home, WE like to be 'prepared'. I left to run errands today - who should pull up right next to our house - Mike Ferry, one of the fine folks from California's Center for Sustainable Energy - heading up California's Clean Vehicle Rebate Program. Never met the man until today. How did I know it was him?

Let's just say that after having been given a wonderful opportunity to drive one of Toyota's Proof of concept PHEV's for several days ... the car he pulled up in was easily recognizable. Plus, the CSE logo was a give away too. You can see part of our Solar Array on our rooftop, in the background if you look carefully. Anyway, Mike was going to a wedding at our neighbor's house. We chatted a bit, and it reminded me to do the public service thing here. CSE are the folks that will assist you (again, in CA) with obtaining your state rebate money. Several states have these kind of programs. If YOU are buying the PHEV Prius ... then YOU need to find out what YOUR state is offering, in addition to Federal money that's available. Mikes group was VERY helpful in making sure we got our $5,000 rebate money for our leaf.

Here's a quick blurb from one of the web sites I found regarding rebate money, though the amounts may be smaller now that time has gone by:

California Assembly Bill 118 is funded through 2015, but proposed legislation could be a minor threat to the program.
On the day of purchase, you can apply online for the rebate. The money is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. If funds run out before you buy, you are placed on a queue for future funds, if and when they become available.
The Nissan LEAF qualifies for $5,000 and the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid qualifies for $3,000. The 2011 Chevy Volt does not qualify all, although it’s expected to receive the necessary certification for the 2013 model year (due in summer 2012).

That's dated July, so it isn't a brand new change either. I wonder where the confusion between $3000 and $1500 came from?

Simple - the state is doling out to more people, as they're expecting the number of EV's & PHEV's to increase substantially over the next year. Thus, even though more money is being made available, it's expected that a whole bunch more people will be applying for it. They reduced the max amount on clean vehicles, so that more folks can get a crack at it.

well $2500 from Govt and then $1500 from CA, and in reality you are paying less than for Prius :).

It all comes back to what i wrote before - Prius PHEV makes a LOT of sense, given that to you Prius makes sense. Meaning if you start comparing if you will save money compared to buying used 2006 Yaris sedan, it cant ever win...
