    Howdy,

About to pull the trigger on a 2010 Prius package III, with approx 40K on it (out of bumper to bumper warranty). It's not a rental.

Any areas I should be looking at that are a concern? Door handles falling off, seats squeaking, steering wheel buttons getting stuck?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Kevin

I have over 70,000 miles on my 2010. It is like a rock. Zero repairs.

The only thing you might want to look or listen for rattles and other noise. Drive the car over a bumpy road when it is cold. You can find them fast. They can be fixed.

    High price.
G3's are fetching KBB retail + on the market.

Are you buying from a dealer or an individual? If from a dealer was it a trade-in, or did the dealer get it from an auction (red flag!)
Get a Carfax report. If you're getting it from a dealer and they claim that they do not have this information, then walk away. They're either lying to you (most car dealerships have commercial Carfax accounts) or they're morons, who themselves bought this car without availing themselves of it's history.
If you're buying it from an individual, see if you (they) can get the maintenance records and demand that they pop for a $20 CarFax report for the car.
If all else fails----get this information yourself.
Find out if you're in a CARB state. If so, then certain components still have a warranty, most importantly the battery.
Don't worry if this is not the case for you. Despite the bad press, Priuses have a very low failure rate for the traction battery. The 12-v battery is another matter, but even it's rather high price ($250 or so) is not a deal breaker.
The previous poster is correct. The G3 (3rd Generation Prius) is a low maintenance car with a pretty good track record for reliability. For getting you to your destination with a low operating cost and not helping your mechanic make his boat payments, it's a tough car to beat. I'm not being a sexist by the way. Female mechanics aren't stupid enough to buy boats.
    Drive the car.
    Then.....drive it again.
Hertz has a "tree hugger" assortment (they don't call it that) of vehicles including G3's that you can rent for a weekend to see if you and the G3 are a good match. There are certain aspects to the Prius driving experience including rattles, criminally poor rearward visibility, AVEO-like seating appointments, non functional rear wiper(unless it’s function is to further reduce visibility, that is…), weak FM radio, etc.... that should all be fully explored before you pop for a $20,000 two year-old five seater.
I'm not trying to pour cold water on your lustful intents to become a G3 owner. I drive one every day, but they're at record high prices right now, and so you'll suffer a more acute case of buyer's remorse if you get one now and it's not what you really REALLY wanna drive, especially if you get one with a sullied past.

One additional tidbit for thought. The Aichi Iron works recently announced that they've ramped up to full pre-tsunami production. Gas prices are trending downward. Annnnnnd there is the new PHV that (may be) available in the US soon. The G3 just received a mid-life makeover (the plus makes it better!)
All of these will eventually exert downward pressure on used 2010 and 2011 G3's and probably left over 2011's and 2012 "cordless" or non-PHV G3's as well.

    Hope some of this helps.

    Good Luck!!!
    Let us know..... :D

I'd recommend have a pre-purchase inspection done by a Toyota dealer.

Yeah, the darn car makes the corners of my mouth twitch upward and causes me to babble annoyingly about how much I like it. Disgusting!

Thanks for all the great advice.

I'll see how much a PPI is. (Pre purchase inspection). Both Carfax and Car Check check out and it hasn't been smoked in.

I will definitely let you guys know if we get it so I can flood you with noobie questions. ;)
