Hello all, I am new to the forum, and my name is Bill Holland. I just bought a certified used 07 Prius, with the touring package. It has 78,000 miles on it. It has a comprehensive 1 year warranty or 12,000 miles.
I am very mechanically inclined, and love systems, however after reading some articles on the systems of the Prius, I get a little scared about the possible cost of parts needing replacement. I say this because the dealer tried to sell us on an extended warranty, and my father said to not buy it.
The comprehensive extended warranty would extend the warranty another 8 years or 125,000 miles. Doing the math, it came out to be about 2,000$ including a maintenance package.
If anything goes wrong, it is going to be costly, however I do not believe anything major will go wrong before 125,000 miles from what I have heard from other Prius owners. What I can say however is that they ARE replacing the brake actuator as it was making squeeking sounds the day we bought it.
I absolutely love this car, and am enjoying the average 48 mpg for the 200 miles we drove it already.
What are your thoughts on this extended warranty/service package? Is it worth it?
    William Holland

Welcome and don't worry about your Prius, as they are basically bullet proof!!! Change the trans axle oil every 30,000 and watch the 12v battery. Otherwise just drive it. Hal

Don't worry. I started my 2004 from 106K miles. I only changed spark plug, transmission oil (ATF WS) and 12V battery. Now it is 147K, no any issues.

Make sure you check online the maintenance record. Dealer can also print out for you.

Extended warranty is for someone who is psychologically weak, and thus want a false sense of "peace of mind". The best warranty is the condition of the car, the on going maintenance and Toyota!

Have fun and welcome to PC!

The word "Toyota" is all the extended warranty you need.

It is so true! The taxi guy "extended" his Prius to half million miles I remember, without major repairs.

In addition to what Hal W. said I would ask whether these have been performed around the year 5/60000 miles mark. PCV valve, engine coolant change, rear and parking brake adjustment, brake fluid replacement. F.O.B battery (passive RFID) replacement.

I would also ask whether the inverter coolant pump had been replaced under warranty and verified that it had been done correctly by checking for turbulence with the car at READY.

Like Hal W said check the 12 V battery reading and ask whether the transaxle oil has been replaced. I suggest changing it every 40k mi.

Also know that the Prius FOB will work if inserted in the slot under the ON button even if it's battery is dead.

Hi William! I too just bought a certified pre-owned 2007 Prius (has 50k miles on odo) 3 weeks ago. Dealer also offered extended warranty, but I declined. It already has the 12 month bumper to bumper, 7year/100k powertrain, and 10 year 150k hybrid battery warranty as a CPO. That is more than enough peace of mind for me. Dealer also offered 1 year free maintenance and a 2.9 apr for 60 months to sweeten the deal! As for maintenance this site has a wealth of information and a myriad of helpful people! Follow the recommendations, and you should do fine.

It is a wonderful car and should give you no problems. In 3 weeks (and about 1.2k miles), I have seen an increase in my fuel efficiency. My first week (first tank of gas), I was running on the factory recommended tire pressures, and was still practicing my driving techniques. I got 52mpg. In my third week, I am averaging close to 58mpg and got a personal record of 68.6 mpg on the trip home last friday! As a relative newbie, all I did to increase efficiency was change driving habits and increase tire pressure to 42/40. I am probably going to get an ultragauge or torque app, to help me improve on this some more.

In any case, congratulations on your purchase! I do not regret the purchase of this car, and I hope that you do not as well! Enjoy your new car!

Is that 42 psi for the front and 40psi for the rear?

I was thinking of an extended warranty for my pre-owned 2008 Prius, but after some advice on the forum, and reading how little has been needed to get over 300,000 miles for those owners.... not going to waste the money.

Lucky. That's pretty common. Mine does it. I've driven another that does it and been in another 06 (actually usbseawolf2000's) that did it too. There are some TSBs on it like http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...19051-my-brakes-barking-me-7.html#post1092787. I don't know the most current one.

From the link at the beginning of http://priuschat.com/forums/toyota-.../29211-tsb-br001-07-brake-actuator-noise.html, it's apparently a pretty big job.
The 10 year/150K mile HV battery warranty has nothing to do w/it being CPO though. It's the CARB emissions HV battery warranty that came w/the car assuming it was sold and registered in a CARB state. OP can confirm it via his warranty booklet.

Thanks everyone, I just purchased a repair manual and going to study the systems, I will become the primary mechanic of this car ;) I have a strong feeling however that I won't have to do much more than routine maintenance.

My 2007 has been absolutely phenomenal. I've barely broken it in at 80,000 miles :)

Even if I were at 200K miles, I wouldn't be stressing.
