Judging by the photos that Paradox uploaded, they look like drums.

And I was wrong. If you look at the lower left corner of the door in the picture, you will spot a large loudspeaker. This is the same in the Euro model. The base is located on both sides behind the side doors.

Looks decent. Not sure on its price, though, even though it's well appointed. Car and driver said that the CVT drains every single bit of fun of excitement out of it.

Car and Driver opinions have little to do with my daily driving. There is nothing worse than a manual trans in bumper to bumper traffic. Automatics have improved in the latest models, but there is still a wait to engage a speed (gear?). Give me a CVT any day.

And a commuter car is supposed to replace a Miata?

Magazines hounded on the smart's jerky transmission (mine smoothed out after 1,000km but I agree, it was very jerky for the first 1,000km) but after it smoothed out and I used the manual mode, it was hella fun to drive. That was mentioned in an article because they were so focused on disliking the transmission.

doesnt it have manual mode? I tried S-CVT in Avensis and manual mode behaves exactly like a manual would.

It's a mild case of fearing the unknown.
People know manual and the automatic step transmission. Everything else is different and makes them uneasy. They have had little to no experience with automated manuals, CVTs, and double clutch autos. Since these systems don't work just like their comfort transmissions, and most are unwilling to learn about the differences, they see them as being wrong.

+1. Although I find that manual drivers tend to understand automated manuals (SMGs) and double clutch gearboxes better than most.

If you have a diesel or other manual with a lot of torque, it's the same annoyance as with an automatic transmission. You simply use the clutch instead of the brake to control the car.
Only the adaptive cruise control is a major step forward in this kind of traffic.

The Scion iQ has officially arrived at some dealers. I saw a Toyota iQ today, driving through Irvine, not anywhere near a dealer, but with Power Toyota Irvine cardboard new-car dealer plates. So, I called the dealer and they said they received a few. I'll have to test drive it when I have time.

I love the iQ, tell us what you think... just dont make mistake reviewers make, it is not mid sized car, so review it against cars like Smart and see how better it is :)

Ah ... no not for me.

See the 36 ish FE ... points out awesome Prius FE is for a gas car.

Behind the driver, yeah there's zero legroom but I was able to comfortable sit behind the passenger seat.

We've had ours about a year and a half now and still love it. It's not the fastest thing on four wheels - that's for sure, but it sits at 60 mph easily and returns good mpg's, just not as good as the Prius.

It really comes into its own when driving into the town/city as you just don't have to worry about finding a place to park. All those little half spaces where people have parked selfishly are now ours for the taking.

The look on peoples faces when we park our 'half a car' in what appears an impossible space is classic. There are now loads of IQ's whizzing around where I live.

1.0 automatic. Not quick on the 0-60 dash but it gets there ok. Been down to London and back in it, a distance of 200 miles (320 km) each way and it sits happily on the motorway at 70 & 80 mph (110kmh & 130 km/h). It doesn't get blown about as much as you'd expect for its size probably because it's so wide for its size.

If you want maximum mpg's then the Prius wins every time. If you need a city car to park where no other car can, then it's the car for you.

    I've posted it before but here's the pic of our 'half a car';

I think I drove manual 1.0l for a day, i forgot, it was peppy around the town... americans get 1.33 which has plenty of go unless you want to be highway storm trooper :).

Virtually the same thing happened to us yesterday...
We were driving by Jerry's Toyota dealer (on Belair Rd., Parkville, MD) when all of a
sudden my brain said "was that an iQ that I just saw?" After a short errand we went
back and sure enough... (look at the photos below).

Almost immediately we stopped, a salesperson appeared. Fresh-faced young man
new on the job. Offered us a test drive, and was insistent even after I said I was
merely interested and had no intent to buy. Impressions:
    * While there are rear seats, they hardly qualify to be called so.
(The salesman scrambled into the back for the first time and discovered that the
only place to sit comfortably is behind the passenger. Good natured, he kept smiling.)
    * I'm 6'1" and had no headroom issues, legroom a little tight.
    * Front seating felt roomy but felt closed-in due the dash looming up like a
cliff, not the unobtrusive gentile slope of the Prius.
    * 11 standard airbags: 2 front passenger, 2 front seat-mounted side, 2 seat cushion, 2
front knee, 2 side curtain, and 1 rear window. It will be a thrill if they all go off together.
    * 1.3L engine adequate oomph on 5 mi drive, some hills, noisier than Prius.
    * I wonder why this car doesn't have start/stop feature. It would help the MPGs in town.
    * Salesman thought there was a donut spare, window sticker showed pump and goo.
    * Car is wide and tall for its footprint. Salesman bragged, "only 12 ft. 1/10 inch long!"
    * If you don't look back, it's easy to forget that there is so little following you up the road.
If/when you are tailgated, it'll feel like the guy's bumper is up against the front seat back.
    * Car has the turn signals on the rearview mirrors. Why does the Prius still lack this?
    * The purplish one has a little spoiler out back-- aero significant? -- and alloy wheels
and a couple of extra electrical doodads inside; +1K on price. Silver one still had
the transport steelies... customer gets to customize it as they like.

He was knowledgable about the Prius, they have the Gen III and v. Said he was
looking forward to the PIP and c, but had no idea of arrival dates. He was most excited
about the next gen Avalon, 2013?, which he said is a closely guarded secret which
"will be better than the Lexus."

Hmmm... that would be a surprise.
Is a rag-top Avalon still offered?

Well it is labelled asa 3+1 so yeah realistically, a 3 passenger car with an L-shaped cargo area lol. Or a 2-passenger car with a lot more space than the smart (and I stuffed my smart fortwo with a lot of things and still could see out the back).

I thought the CVT was annoying, after getting used to the PSD in our hybrids. The PSD operates much more smoothly without the rubberband-effect.

I've heard rumours about the next gen Avalon being sleek (like the A7, CLS, Panamera, Passat CC etc) and potentially getting hybridised. With the LaCrosse and (potentially) the XTS shaking up the market, Toyota has a lot on its hands although I'm still wondering how many Avalons they do sell. It must be enough to keep on redesigning.

Also, I think you're thinking about the Solara Convertible. The Avalon is a fullsize sedan.
