From reading the rest of it, it's not using the ill-fated two-mode system co-developed w/GM and DaimlerChrysler. I wonder how this will do in sales and whether it'll see the same fate as the ActiveHybrid X6.

(Personally, the "ActiveHybrid" and "Efficient Dynamics" monikers that BMW uses bug me...)

Same here, Mercedes uses "BlueEfficiency". Every car company is copying the blue theme with a gimmicky name. As long as it is better than this!

The 2-mode is dead at BMW and Mercedes. This is an evolution of the hybrid system bmw and mercedes designed for the ActiveHybrid 7 and S400. It has increased the power of the motor to give more assist and ability to run with the engine off. It is similar to the hybrid system in the Infiniti M and Hyundai sonata, with a electric motor instead between an automatic transmission and a lithium battery buffering power. It can run electric alone so it is a full hybrid unlike the ActriveHybrid 7 or honda system. In this case it is using a turbo 6 cylinder instead of Atkinson and 8 speed transmission. The hybrid system adds 340lbs and 45hp to the 535i and should be about 4mpg more efficient.

strange marketing language that doesn't translate as well from the german, but not that different than hybrid synergy drive language.
