2007 Prius oil change indicator?

    Recently took possession of a 2007 Prius. However, the dealer does not have any maintenance records and I couldn't find any recent ones on Toyota Owner's site.

    Already put-in about 450 miles and am getting about 45mpg(30% city/ 70% highway), doing about 70+ on highways.

    Is there an oil indicator that shows up on the 2007 Prius letting the driver know its time for an oil change? or should I just go ahead and schedule one for next weekend and then keep track of it?

    A yellow light comes on every 5,000?, the owners Manuel gives directions for turning it off, having your oil changed is never a bad thing, Mobil1 full synthetic 0-20, 0-30 and a good filter are a good choice, enjoy :welcome:

    Also, how would I know if the previous owner used regular or synthetic oil?

    One way is to login with Toyota Owner's Online, create an account, and enter the VIN. Once completed you can search for Service History. If the previous owner had the vehicle serviced at a Toyota dealer the service records should be available. Even then, unless they specified, it may be hard to determine the type of oil used. I know the Toyota recommended for your vehicle is the non-synthetic. They did not switch to synthetic until 2010.

    The owner's manual and the oil filler cap for 2007 specify 0W 30. You can use either dino oil or synthetic. The present day synthetics are fully compatible with regular oils and vice-versa. Change the oil, reset the oil change reminder by starting the car while holding down the ODO button until the odometer display stops blinking. You will then be reminded to change the oil again after 5000 miles. Have fun!

    By the way, I tried using the 0W oils but was annoyed by the valves rattling more than usual. If all else fails, follow the manufacturer's directions!
