The mic installed in the car is active (powered) one. The chinese unit uses the passive capacit microphone.

    Hi Unreal,

My camera came in today - only 9 days from the day I ordered it - Not to bad considering it shipped from Shenzhen China !!! ( i ordered from the same seller you used..)

I am going to install the unit this weekend, and think I have one last question - Was the yellow/Black Video Cable that came with the camera long enough to reach from the rear hatch to the Radio Unit ???

I think that was the only question I had - I Wanted to be sure if i needed an extention cable for the video that I had one available before starting...

Also - Did they send bracket mounting screws with your unit ? It showed them in the book, but I did not get any - I assume you used the original bracket screws from the factory radio ?

Thanks again for all your help... I will post pictures after I do the install.. :)

    Dan

You said you used the old screws? My Ottonavi unit only plugged into the plastic holder, there were no screw mounts for it. Kind of bothered me at first, but it seems to be very secure. I wonder if I missed something when putting it in???

On the Rosen Unit, and the FlyAudio Unit, you have to transfer the brackets from the factory stereo to the new unit...

That was why I asked Unreal about the Screws... I knew you would have to transfer the brackets, but in the instruction book it listed screws as being included... I just assumed he used the factory screws as well as the brackets...

I would not mount the radio with just those 4-plastic fingers... They are only thin ABS and I do not think they will last long before snapping off... I think they are just there to hold the radio in place while the factory worker screws the radio into the dash with the brackets...

    Just my thoughts...

OK, thank you so much for the response and recommendation. I agree with you, I just didn't know you could transfer the brackets. Thanks.

with this unit, no need to transfer the bracket, I just pulled the old stereo out and plug in the new one..
Also once installed with the 4 screw, theres no need to take those screws out again just push/pull on the 2 side plastic pins if you wanna do something on the back like connect some rca, wires etc...

Interesting. I didn't install any screws, just plugged it in. I guess I'm going to see if I can transfer the steel brackets over to make it more secure. But if I can't, I'm not that worried, because it is in there pretty darn good.

UPDATE: Danorob is correct, I took the brackets off the sides of the stock unit along with the 4 screws per bracket (8 total) holding it and put them on the side of the Ottonavi unit, perfect fit. Now the unit plugs in and the stock 4 bolts (with 10mm heads) holds it securely in place. Unreal, in order to remove the unit I will have to take out the 4 bolts just like the stock unit.

    Thanks,
    Glenn

This question is for "Unreal" or "Glennhl" since they both have the OttoNavi unit...

How the hell to you change the Master Clock from 24HR time format to 12HR time format???

I have tried everything - I have the GPS Clock in 12HR format, and set, and I have set the master clock, but I can not for the life of me figure out how to get it to read a 12HR format???

Help !!!!!!!!! (otherwise it is great - Will update my install thread tonight)...

    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

Yea, that drove me crazy also. I also set the GPS clock to the 12 hour setting, but for some reason I can not figure out how to get the Radio clock into the 12 hour format. I figured I'll just have to live with it.

How is the sound in the AM and FM mode? I have a little static. Nothing really bad, but not crystal clear like the OEM JBL deck.

Since I do not ever listen to the AM radio, I could not tell you -

The FM Is clear as a bell - I think part of it has nothing to do with the OttoNavi Unit itself, but I think living in Central Jersey I just have very good reception...

Other People have complained about the reception of the stock radio, but I never had any issues with the reception on the factory stereo either...

Thank you for replying - I guess I will send off an e-mail to OttoNavi and see if they have the answer...

Question concerning iPhone and Ottonavi : does anyone know is song data from Pandora would show on the display? I know standard iPod music data shows up, but I was hoping other music apps would transmit data to the headunit as well.

Ok, thanks to all of you out there in this wonderful community, I have successfully purchased an OttoNavi system, and installed it on my own! I took some pictures along the way, and attached them below in the hope that it makes this easier for some folks!

I have never done a car stereo installation before, so if I can do this, so can you! Most of the pictures have their own built-in captions, so I will let them do the talking.

A few notes to read BEFORE installing:
1- Although I don't explicitly mention it, please remember to connect the AM/FM Antenna to the new HU at some point in your installation.
2- Although it is advised, I did not disconnect my 12-volt battery during any of the installation.
3- As noted in the pictures, there are a lot more steps to installing a backup camera. I have just listed the two that need to be completed before your HU is put in. If you receive your camera later (as I did), you can always remove it and connect the camera wires/cables at that point.
4- A plastic pry tool is invaluable and basically necessary for this installation, and particularly so for the camera installation. You can find one for CHEAP at harbor freight. I got mine at Best Buy in their overpriced but extremely useful car stereo installation kit: (Tool Kit for Vehicle Stereo Installation - IBR-TLKT) I would recommend ordering what you need ahead of time from Harbor Freight Tools because they are cheaper! I was lazy and couldn't bear waiting, so I got the kit from Best Buy.
5- This may sound stupid, but be sure to remove any cds from your old HU BEFORE you remove it! I lost a CD this way... LOL!
6- (I'm sure I'll think of something later, and put it in here!)

Please let me know if you have any additional questions!
I will be posting my camera install pics after this post.

*Sigh* It says that I need to post at least 5 times before I can include urls in my posts. Because that is necessary for my camera post, I am going to post twice here in order to reach my quota. Please forgive the spam!

Darn, my 5th post could have been useful after all!

I haven't tried the AM stations, and wouldn't know where to begin.
FM stations: All of them are clear, but one of the stations I used to get about 60% of the time, I now get about 45% of the time. My wife also says that in some areas, she doesn't get as good reception as she used to.

The good: The radio comes with 4 separate sets of six presets. In other words, my wife can set 12 of her own, and I can set 12 of my own! No more fights! ;)

The scan and seek are excellent, but tuning manually is SLOW! This is because it tunes every .1, not every .2
    For example:

    With the standard radio: 97.1 - 97.3 - 97.5 (no even decimals)
    With the new HU: 97.1 - 97.2 - 97.3 - 97.4 - 97.5

But, if you use the seek/scan, you can find them fast. Also, once they are set, you are good to go! And with 24 presets, you never need to seek/scan again!

Cool/possibly strange: The display automatically lists the call numbers for the station (ie. WJBL, WJAM, etc.), and depending on the station and the way they are broadcasting, the song that is playing. Kind of cool! You can also input custom names for each station, but when I try to do this, it always reverts back... not sure what to do about that.

The steering wheel control buttons work just as they did with the old stereo. If you press the up/down arrows, it switches between your preset stations. If you press the mode button, it cycles through all of the modes of the system. Volume works just as it did before, but if you hold it down, it moves FAST!

Let me know if you have more questions!

I wonder if the bad sound from the AM/FM is because of the JBL interface. But the sound is perfect for the IPOD. Maybe I just have a bad unit. I still haven't heard back from Ottonavi.

The reason disconnecting the battery is suggested is so the airbags don't deploy if you're a little rough.

Glenh--This poster doesn't have the JBL system and his radio reception isn't has good as the stock HU.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the radio reception isn't as good as the stock radio for people who are in a fringe area.
