Official TSB for brake shims on rear disks?

    One of my rear brake disks is a bit rusty (~25%), the other slightly rusty. I investigated as the car was making the tell-tale rusty brake squeal. As usual, I thought it was the front - but the disks are clean.

    I noticed on the forum a couple of Toyota Service Bulletin for the Gen iii US model - but is there a known issue with shims on Gen ii European models (with disks)?

    It's true that I don't use the car a lot, and it's parked outside - so it's no shocker if I have a bit of surface disk rust - but normally driving a few KM should clean rust off a disk.

    N.b - I've tried putting the car in neutral and braking - and even tried downhill and applying the Park brake. I think the latter has helped, but it's a worry that I have to do that, especially heading into winter.

    (I have to say, the back disks look surprisingly scored for a car that supposedly does a lot of regen braking.....but if there *is* a shim issue, then it would contribute to scoring IMHO)

    I bought the car in April (registered Dec 09), it has nearly 38k km. I've probably done about 1000km since I got it.

    1. I am not aware of a TSB for European 2G models having to do with the rear brakes, but the available technical info here is oriented more towards US owners. You could check this website for more info: Toyota Service Information

    2. 1000 km ~= 600 miles. If you have only driven 100 miles/month since April, and the car is parked outside then there's no wonder that the brakes are corroding away. At that rate the car is so lightly used that maybe you would be better off relying upon taxis or renting when you need a vehicle. Beyond the brakes rusting, another issue you will face is a dying 12V auxiliary battery - unless you can periodically charge it.

    Taxis and renting isn't an option; I have a toddler and a baby (with accompanying plethora of accessories) - and the missus' car is an all-paid-for company car, so we mostly use that. I try to use the car one week in 3 to the office, but it's nose-to-tail snails pace (18km/h this morning) traffic - in fact the main reason I bought a Prius!

    I've owned cars for over 25 years, and rebuilt 40+ of the beasts - although not recently, ref wife&kids. Sure, disks will get rusty even if a car is parked in a garage - but unless it's a shim or stuck piston issue it should clear within a few miles (especially with enthusiastic braking). The fact that it's not led me to ask the question.

    It'll be getting used daily very soon thankfully, as the toddler goes to pre-school in 3 weeks....(how did that happen?!)
