I was wrong. The iPad2 has one mono speaker. I was thinking of a Toshiba that my wife had on loan, a very nice one too. As a hard core Apple fan, my wife had a lot of good things to say about that droid tablet.

It looks like there are two speakers from large pics of step 22 at iPad 2 Wi-Fi Teardown - Page 3 - iFixit. (Step 20 of iPad Wi-Fi Teardown - Page 3 - iFixit has the dual mono speakers from the 1st iPad.)

I remember being impressed by the bass of the iPad 1 speakers when at the Apple store (never owned one). I own an iPad 2 an dI think the sound quality on the iPad 2 is a step back, but I'm not sure.

The iPad2 plays the same Youtube video 50% louder & clearer than my *brand new* Lenovo W520 (this model was built in June 2011).

For my Objective-C course, I went out and bought an Apple Air w/256G drive and I5 processor.

The iPad2 still plays louder than both laptops !!!

We had a party at the house last night. Someone brought out an iPad to show something on Youtube. And of course half of the people at the table could barely hear what was going on.

$325.00 in 1948 dollars is the same as $2910.48 today. You can get three 64 gig iPads with 3g with for that.

Regarding the patent disputes and all that were discussed earlier,
Microsoft signs Compal deal, now takes money from half of all Android ODMs -- Engadget has a diagram of all the Android patent licensing and litigation going on. For those don't know, companies like Wistron, Compal, Foxconn, Inventec and Quanta are ODMs that manufacture stuff for a LOT of companies but you won't find the ODM's name on the outside of the product.

edit: http://www.fool.com/investing/value/2011/10/24/does-microsoft-own-android.aspx has a chronology of companies that have caved. More info at http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=23088 including links to patents supposedly involved w/the Motorola lawsuit.

Looks like the iPhone 4S has stereo sound. Not sure if this was there in the iPad2 or iPhone4.

I have the same setting options on my iPhone 4. Not sure how much the settings actually do, as I always use the phone with headphones or stand alone speakers if I'm going to be listening to music or watching videos.

Ditto. I can't speak for the 4S, as I haven't physically tried one out yet, but all iPhones from the 4 all the way back to the 1st gen have only 1 speaker. The other hole on the bottom is the mic. You can verify this yourself by playing a song and covering one hole at a time.

iPhone only has one working bottom speaker/defective speaker - MacRumors Forums used to be a sticky.

I suspect those accessibility options control the output from the audio via the dock connector and headphone jack.

I think you're right. Since this is in the accessibility Settings, it's likely designed for people with some sort of hearing problem who listen via the headphone or 30-pin port.

BTW, what are the technical and audio differences between the speaker at the bottom and the one near the ear?

    I'm really, really hating iCloud.

I get an app for my iPad. iCloud says "Hey, it's not marked on the List Of Apps For The iPad", so it deletes it. iCloud then says "Hey, we have this new app on the list but it's not on your iPhone yet! Obviously you want it there!" So it then puts it on my iPhone without telling me (and it's still not on my iPad). I then delete an app I don't want anymore from my iPad, but iCloud says "Hey, it's marked on the List Of Apps For the iPad" so it puts it back on.

I then rearrange the apps on my iPhone (which, of course, iCloud completely messed up). iCloud then says "Hey, they're like THIS on your computer!" so puts them back that way (the way I DON'T want). So then I rearrange them on the computer, but then iCloud says "Hey, they're like THIS on your iPhone!" so puts them back that way AGAIN. Grrrr.

Did I mention that you can only rearrange apps on the computer when the iPhone is physically hooked up? The whole point of iCloud is to sync up wirelessly. Before iCloud, I'd sync my iPhone about once a week or so. Now, I seem to have to hook it up a couple of times a day!

    Thanks, Apple!

I sure am glad I said NO to iCloud when I updated my iPod to iOS5. I thought it was just an off-site back-up service, which I don't need. Thanks for the warning. I'll keep it turned off.

bummer about iCloud; and iOS 5 data deletion quirk

Wow, regarding iCloud. I have it turned off, for now as well. That sucks. I'll have to keep that in mind if I decide to turn it on. I too have an iPad 2 and iPhone 4.

Side note: I'm not sure if this has been posted yet but I learned of this I think from Tivocommunity. For those on iOS 5, if you didn't know, "if you are downloading large files and your iPad or iPhone is running low on 'disk' space, iOS 5 can remove data from inside apps." More at Flying with ForeFlight and iOS 5 « ForeFlight: Intelligent Apps for Pilots and Cleaning… – Marco.org (for some more technical details).

I haven't had a chance to look into what the threshold is.

Re: bummer about iCloud; and iOS 5 data deletion quirk

That's just developers being stupid. by definition a tmp (or temp, or temporary) folder should not be considered permanent, and yet they were treating it as if it was. Your computer has tmp or temp folders in it... your browser, for example, stores a lot of stuff in a temp folder that eventually gets deleted... but while it's there, it makes often-vistited webpages load faster. Likewise, a cache, in computer-speak, is essentially a local, quickly accessed mirror of external data. Instead of having to go out to the web to download it, it can access it from the cache. Of course, there are issues with caches (you have to ensure your local data matches the remote data, or you might not see updates, for example), but those are well known with widely accepted solutions. A cache traditionally has a limited amount of space, and as you put newer items into it, older items (or less-used items) are removed to make room.

So, with that background... those developers are idiots. They took advantage of the fact that Apple wasn't doing anything to their temporary local data stores, and now it came back to bite them in the butt. You can bet that developers who took advantage of this are already adapting and are hopefully starting to make intelligent decisions as to where to place their files.

Just like I answered a year ago, my iPhone 4 died (the home button stopped buttoning), so I got a 5.
