my 08 prius just hit 116k the other day and besides the regular oil change, cabin and engine filter change and a engine water pump (under warranty), i have not performed any service on it. still runs great.

what do i NEED to get done on the car? i fear the dealer will just rip me off and not actually do any work on their ### miles check.

    thanks

You should change the inverter coolant as well as the transaxle fluid. Then you need to address a few things on the engine: replace spark plugs, PCV valve, clean the MAF sensor and throttle body (butterfly valve + bore). The engine items can wait for a while as long as you do not have misfire or burn oil. The transaxle fluid is the most pressing, since data indicate a typical lifetime of 200,000 miles on the original fill. Since you drive 40K miles/year, there is no need to change the 12V yet unless you have noticed the car getting flakey or have let it run flat and need to be jumped.

You should be nearing your second Transaxle fluid change at 120,00 miles. If you never did the first one, this is a good time.

120,000 miles would be a fine time to replace the PCV Valve if you have not already.

Other than that, Toyota recommends new spark plugs at 120,000 miles.

Your location is too vague to make a recommendation for a mechanic who will not rip you off. I spent 17 weeks walking end to end, it is a big state.

Mine cost $109, so this is in a good range.
If you are having the water pump done under warranty, they will need to drain and refill the engine coolant, be sure you are not paying for that, Toyota already is.
I have not done this, but it sounds reasonable.

The purpose of a tranny flush is to exchange ATF that wouldn't come out with a simple drain. This is important in transmissions with a torque converter - our Prii do not have one. There is only one drain plug so you can't "flush" .

Flush is the sound of wallet emptying...almost never something that you need on a Prius, regardless of the system in question.

At 116K miles I would say that front strut/rear shock replacement is past-due. They become marginal after 60K miles.

The price quoted for front and rear strut replacement doesn't seem too bad. The struts will run close to $400 and labor is usually between $200 and $300 depending on labor rates for a particular area. Another thing to keep in mind is spring sag. My springs were sagging after 130,000 miles so I swapped them out for lowering springs while I replaced my worn out struts. The point is that even if you replace your struts you may still experience poor handling because of the worn stock springs.

*edit* I just noticed that the front and rear struts were separate charges. I would suggest buying the struts and having a local shop do the work. My buddy runs a stereo shop in Fairfield (I worked there for a decade or so) and could do the front and rear struts for under $800 (struts plus labor) or close to it. He can order the struts for you as well. They used to do suspension on imports so I had them install my springs and struts last spring. If you are interested the contact info is Audio & Performance Systems 707-422-2771. Tell them Justin sent you. ;)

The engine items are easy to replace and can be DIY for most people with even a little mechanical skills.
