When the oil change recommendations went from 5000 miles to 10000 miles, something was posted on this site about getting a free oil from Toyota, if you already had the 5000 mile service from the dealer. I think that Toyota was to send out the coupons in Feb 2010, to those it applied to. Right after that, Toyota had numerous recall issues and I never got a coupon or heard about this again. Does anyone know about this? Thanks.

Negitive. The Prius Team indicated that a coupon was a no-go.

After the interval was changed, somebody posted here a letter (from I believe Toyota Chicago region) saying, among other things, that a coupon would be issued to those who paid for an oil/filter service at 5K miles.

I received the updated maintenance schedule booklet in the mail, but no coupon, so I called Toyota customer service, and told them about the letter from Toyota Chicago region. They said the letter should not have been released, that it was being considered, and if approved would be communicated. I paid for the 10K maintenance last week.

What is the problem when a manufacturer halves the oil change needs and then fails to meet your expectations by giving you a free oil change coupon? What exactly have they done to incur your wrath?

Help me out here, I want to be angry too!

Yep...sounds like something toyota might do. Don't worry about it though, don't let it get ya angry.

So, 2011 got two free oil changes and 2010 didn't?

Did vehicles come with non-synth oil upon delivery?

Both 2010 and 2011 get certificates for the first 2 years of maintenance. I don't believe there was any change here.

When I purchased my 2011 earlier this year, the sales person mentioned that the first 2 years included complimentary oil changes. I decided to take advantage of it at 5,000 miles. I figured if there were any metal filings floating around the engine, this would be a good time to drain it.

Well... they denied me of the oil change and stated they could not change it until 10,000 miles.

Could anyone tell me if I should be worried that the first oil change won't occur until 10,000 miles?

I changed mine at 1500 miles to get the silicone left over from casting and and any metal shavings out. I changed it again at 5K and 10K miles because 5K was the recommended interval at that time. Since 10K miles I have changed it every 10K as recommended.

But I also think if you don't plan on keeping the car to long it would be OK to wait until 10K.

Did I waste my money by doing an early oil change? No one knows for sure, but I do my own oil changes and it didn't cost much. It may or may not help the engine but it sure don't hurt. Oil analysis from 1st oil changes have indicated a lot of silicone in both the engine and transaxle in addition to metal shavings. Some say this hurts nothing, I would rather do an early oil change for peace of mind.

Toyota will do free oil change at 10k and 20k miles. I believe free tire rotation at every 5k miles.

I received an owner's packet in the mail describing what the dealer will do at each free check-up.

I recently received the same response when attempting to get a change using a certificate in advance of the recommended maintenance. Since each certificate can only be used once, I am unclear as to why they would deny service given that you're making a conscious decision to use it early.

My dealer said I could use the 10,000 mile coupon early, no problem.

For the 2010, that was a sales incentive added after various Toyotas ran into serious publicity issues over both real and alleged problems. Most of us who bought earlier did not get those certificates.

That makes sense. It was being offered in at least March 2010, and I guess that incentive started right before then. I was 2 weeks short of getting 0% financing, so there shouldn't be much regret. ;-)
