Dealer used a second-hand coolant pump? What should I do?

I just had the inverter coolant pump replaced under the recall and I'm absolutely certain that the dealer put on a second-hand part for the pump!

Take a look at this photo, taken after just driving a few miles home on really clean sealed roads (see attachment). See on the upper edge in the photo there is one clean section where I rubbed off some of the dust with my finger to test it. It was pretty firmly caked on and did not come off all that easily. I can guarantee that this part has definitely been on a car for some time.

    What do you think?

BTW I forgot to add. I know you'd swear from the photo that the dealer hadn't even bother replacing the part,. just said they'd done it - right. But no, my pump had actually stopped working, and now it is working - so I know they actually did do something. But I'm certain it's not a new part.

Maybe it's a rebuilt part... New internal workings, old housing.

Maybe they rebuilt mine. Has anyone else heard of this happening?

I hope I can trust it.

    1. Look at the receipt.
    2. Call the dealer and ask.
    3. Report back here.

Thanks Dogfriend, that's what I wanted to here. I wouldn't have thought that they'd bother to rebuild them, but who knows. Maybe I should go and talk to them about exactly what they did. I really want to have a pump in there that I can trust.

Actually they didn't give me a receipt. They just gave me the keys back and said there was no cost to me.

Have others here noticed whether their replacement pumps look new?

They wouldn't necessarily rebuild yours, they just put in someone elses which was rebuilt. Yours gets sent out to be rebuilt to be put into someone elses...

As for trusting it, has your dealer been known to 'play games' before either on you or others or have they been reputible? If the later, why doubt them?

Ok, so does anyone else have any solid evidence that they do use rebuilt parts for the recall?

As others have suggested just call the dealership and ask. If they did use a rebuilt part you can then follow up and find out if that was allowed under the terms of the recall. If the dealer does not know or is evasive a call to Toyota of Australia should get you an answer.

I believe the new pump is an improved design compared to the original. It doesn't seem practical that they would rebuild the old ones.

Also, I have a copy of the technical instructions for the recall in the US. It includes the following statement:

    Interesting it says
That does suggest some parts get recycled/refurbished, doesn't it?

I would definitely request for a receipt from the dealer even if it is warranty work.

Normally, even on a rebuilt part, the exterior is cleaned so it almost looks new. I would ask the dealer, make sure the visit gets recorded in thier computer and then go to Toyota Headquarters and state your concern. My replacement certainly looked new and shiney and I took it out of a new box when I bought it, I replaced it and the dealer checked it and replaced the coolant( at no charge) and then Toyota reimbursed the purchase price.

Yeah, that's my concern too andy. If you look at my photo you can see that it looks exactly like it was just pulled from a wrecking yard or something. I've never seen a rebuilt anything that wasn't at least given a basic clean up. This one doesn't look like it's even had the bare minimum clean or even swiped with a rag.

About the only legit explanation that I can think of would be if the internals could be easily removed and separately rebuilt. Personally I've never had the part in my hands for inspection, but I kind of doubt that this would be easy to do. Can anyone who has replaced there own pump comment on this?

It is possible the pump was not even changed out! Could have been another problem. Air lock, no fluid? Hal

    That's what I think too.

It is not clear that any of the parts could be re-used, given the destructive nature of tearing it down.

It is not economically feasible to rebuild them.

    :(

The picture suggests that the pump has never been replaced. The clue is the mounting screws still have the rust and dust at the head and washer, also look at the hose clamp still has the dust against the hose.
May be the mechanic just hit it with a hammer and make it worked again.

No, the fluid has constantly been at the top level mark in the reservoir since I've had the car (over two years). It's never leaked or even been slightly low, and it pumped properly for the first 2 years. Also, after it failed I couldn't even detect any vibration when I felt the pump with my fingers, but now that it's pumping I can easily feel the small vibrations. I also checked that the electrical connection was correctly plugged before I took it in for the recall, and it was, but still no pumping.

Yes that was my first feeling when I saw it, that they'd done absolutely nothing. But it just doesn't explain why it wasn't working before but is working now if this were the case.

I agree that the installed part is not new. I highly doubt that Toyota has a program to rebuild the pumps since they are so inexpensive, and suggest you ask your dealer why a used part was installed in your vehicle.
