    Hey all,

I've been lurking on these forums for a couple weeks and, because of everyone's apparent enthusiasm for the Prius, I decided to buy one. My car has a totally flawless car fax report and has 80,000 miles on it. I didn't find anything when I searched the forums about this, but I've been having some concerns about some noises that are coming from under the hood. The first noise occurs when I get up to speed, usually around 55-65 mph. The noise sounds like a quiet propeller plane under the hood. I don't have any idea what this is, but intuition tells me that it could possibly be something with the CVT. The second noise is a repetitive clicking (almost sounds like a gas range trying to start) that sounds like its coming from somewhere right behind the steering wheel. The final noise is simply some electric sounding noise coming from under the hood after I shut off the car. Anyone know what these could be? These may be normal sounds, but because this is my first Prius, I'm not sure. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow to get it checked out, but any thoughts that you all have could help ease my nerves about possible big problems that I might be looking at.

    Thanks in advance!

Oh, quick addition. The first noise is coming from the front left side of the engine bay, behind the steering wheel.

    1. Your car may have a bad wheel bearing.

    2. Probably the brake actuator pump. Repeatedly depress the brake pedal to see whether that will provoke the noise. If yes, this is the pump and the noise is normal.

    3. Coolant heat recovery pump. That pump will also usually run when you start the car in the morning.

The first two I can't help with. But to add to Patrick's explanation of noise #3, the Prius stores the heated engine coolant between trips. After all, you paid to heat it up, you might as well pump it into a thermos and save it until the next time you drive the car. And that's exactly what it does. This way, the engine gets up to temp faster.

Congrats on the Prius and welcome to Priuschat! :welcome:

Awesome. Thank you so much for the virtual diagnoses! I really appreciate it. I'll let you know what the dealer says. It's still under warranty, so whatever it is should be covered.

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know that the noise was, in fact the bearing and they replaced it under warranty. Thanks again for your help!

Mine went out at 67,000 miles. This seems to be a fairly common failure.
