Glad to hear the dealer took responsibility.

If one worries about overheating a lot then set up PriiDash or Torque or ScanGauge to get early warning.

Yes, that tells me that any time that we do work around the cooling systems or have anyone else do any work that we need to monitor coolant temps afterwards.

One plus for the Gen III is that Toyota was able to get away from the drive belt. The next question though is how long the new electric water pumps will last?

Plus there is a guy in Healdsburg CA that for a little over $1,000 will replace the traction batteries, he is on eBay. Piece of mind in case mine fall short after this event...

Also, what is the normal operating temperature of the coolant in an 05 Prius?

UPDATE: Picked up the car yesterday and it looks, feels and drives like it did before the incident. Like nothing happened. This is what the bill states (sic):

"C/S ENGINE DRIVE BELT CAME OFF THAT WE JUST INSTALLED. RENO TOYOTA INSPECTED AND FOUND ENGINE INTERNALLY FAILED FROM LACK OF COOLAND CIRCULATION. REPAIR AS NEEDED. TECHNICIAN REMOVED AND REPLACED ENGINE DUE TO DRIVE BELT COMING OFF. TECHNICIAN FLUSHED OUT HEATER CORE. RADIATOR AND COOLANT THERMOSTAT AS NEEDED TEST DROVE VEHICLE AND REINSPECTED FOUND ALL SYSTEMS WORKING AS DESIGNED AT THIS TIME"

Then proceeds to describe parts which include a used engine. I asked and was told that the engine has 50k miles on it but there is nothing in writing from the engine supplier not Toyota of Bend. Not that I plan to sell the car but just in case, would it be smart to have them contact the supplier and request a document with the engine serial # and an odometer statement from the totalled car that it was removed from? How can I prove otherwise to a potential buyer that the used engine has 50k on it?

Thanks in advance for your insight on this!

You may want to consider a scan gauge which will give you engine temp among other things. No oil pressure yet, though.

You have a Toyota service record that shows engine R&R. Because it is vague, you can tell a potential buyer anything, including "engine replaced at114K due to dealership service error." Otherwise, you need a copy of the receipt from the engine seller, probably from the dealership business office, or some way to tie the motor serial number to a VIN number and a CarFax for that VIN number to establish provenance.
